Photographer's Note

This Torii belongs to the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island, near Hiroshima.

This Torii and others like it are entrances to temples. As I understand it, this particular temple is built on an island that was once so holly that people could not step into it. To solve the problem the Torii was placed near the coastline so that at high tide it is surrounded by water, and people can pass through it in little boats, pray and turn back withought setting foot on the holy ground of the island itself.
