Nikko Weirs, a photo from Tochigi, Kanto

Photographer's Note

A wintry scene from the bridge in Nikko, located about 160 km north of Tokyo. Even though it was minus 1 or 2 degrees celsius at night / early morning, it was still MUCH warmer than Seoul with a range of -20c to -5c when I left in early February. Daytime temperatures in Nikko were about +10c.

Incredible that just a few weeks after I left, Japan had the 3rd largest earthquake ever recorded on earth (9.1) the devastating tsunami and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant explosions. But by then I was safely back in South Korea.

Hello Chris,
A well framed composition making good use of the succession of weirs to create depth and perspective and to draw the viewer toward the mountains. Agreeable soft lights and colours and excellent sharpness.

Interesantan i lep pogled, lep trenutak, dobar tekst ...
Lepo pokazano, dobra perspektiva i kontrast, lepe boje, lepo uhvacen trenutak.

A vast dam and cascades complex, I can guess it was done in order to regulate the stream, Chris.

Hi Chris
You made a timely exit from Japan. And now you're getting in on the snow photos act, even if from 8 years ago. A good cold view which would be a bit bleak except for the mountains in the background.

I can honestly say I've never seen this place before. Completely new for me. Sadly, Japan has and always will go through such environmental changes. It's only devastating because humans now live here. Glad to hear you made it out just before it happened. Very peaceful view here, lovely shot with the mountains and extreme depth in your shot. well done.

A wonderful view of this landscape with a lot of details to discover. I like the mix of snow, yellow grass and water, especially in this bright sunlight. The mountains make a great backdrop.

Hello Chris,
I was in Nikko a few months before you - in late October 2010. Nice view of the river with some steps and the mountains around. But it is not what Nikko is famous for. Hello Chris,
I remember this beautiful scenery from the bridge but I was there in spring.
The small waterfalls and the different levels of the river leads our eyes well to the dark hills and the snowy mountains beyond.

Hello Chris, wonderful winter landscape captured in Nikko. Snow capped summits can be seen in the far bg. A river is flowing next to the town. The weirs slow down the water during floods and protect the surroundings. Good pov, excellent depth. Perfect sharpness.
