Photographer's Note
Another little look back at my honeymoon trip to Japan in 2019.
I've never been the mass tourist type, trying instead to find my own way around and keeping off the beaten path. But for this day my wife and I did the unthinkable... we boarded at guided tourist bus... *shudder*
This is from a round trip around the island of Sakurajima and the very active volcano that goes by the same name. With the active area of the volcano being Minamidake, or the Southern Peak.
Though it may not be the closest point you get to the ative crater itself, the view of the actual crater is much apparent.
The interesting thing about Sakurajima is the name itself: -jima (or -shima, depending on your reading of the kanji) meaning "Island".
Sakurajima itself is much more a peninsula, but that was not before the massive eruption of 1914, an eruption with lava flow that lasted for months and eventually connected the island to the mainland of Kyushu.

Hi Odd,I too would like to go around on my own in freedom, but I always have little time, so I always rely on organized tours. So,not a bad thing for you too as i can see,the place is beautiful and the experience to visit this natural place with the active volcano too is truly amazing! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hi Odd
A very appropriately titled photo and absolutely beautiful. We too have found it necessary to join a bus trip to get to somewhere otherwise unreachable.
cheers

Hello Odd,
Excellent capture in poor light conditions . The vivid colors of the gate contrast with the cloudy moutains in the Bg . What a great atmosphere !

Hello Odd,
Guided tours are useful for getting you to places, then you can often do your own thing, not necessarily staying with the guide.
I like how you have presented this.
The gateway is bright and welcoming, offering an introduction to a verdant green area. But, it could all be so different, for lurking in the b/g , surrounded by swirling mist, is the open mouth of a malevolent volcano.
You have introduced the tension very effectively!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Odd
A fascinating wide landscape to find calm and tranquility with the catchy emblematic shinto torii gate guides the eye smoothly into he distant foggy mountains. Its a striking image well composed in a rather atmospheric light hour with some rich foliage colours, an equally essential contributor in lifting this image to greater height. A very wistful image accompanied by your intriguing notes and a good travelogue material. Excellent.
Best regards

Hello Odd,
There is probably safety in numbers if there is an unexpected eruption and lava bombs start falling from the sky all over the place. At least if everyone is inside a solid tour bus, they are less likely to get hit with a sturdy roof over their heads. Tourists on Mt Etna were not so lucky and were seriously injured. If you can't read Japanese, the sign probably says "in the event of poison gas, and sirens blaring, please evacuate the park immediately." I saw one such sign in West Java. Both the volcanoes were quiet when I visited, which suits me fine! Tfs!

Wonderful how the red gate stands out in this natural environment. That's a fine capture, Odd Jarle. I also like the well balanced composition.

Stunning capture; it really does look like heaven's gate! Red and green make for such a stunning color palate, but this photo makes use of them exceptionally well. The dark sky lends a very mysterious yet inviting atmosphere to the composition. Great photo!
