Photographer's Note
Have I been to Kazakhstan?
Probably not. I changed flights in 2 cities, got stamps in my passport, spent one night in a hotel in Almaty, met a cheating taxi driver, exchanged currency, purchased souvenirs... But the only photos I've got were taken in the airports and from the plane.
What do you think? What does it mean to "have been somewhere"?
This is a cafe in Almaty Airport. Two more photos in WS.

Hello Kasia,
I also once spent an afternoon in Paraguay and two afternoons in Argentina. Twice from a border town in Brazil. However, I do not count these countries among the ones I have ever visited.
You have of course gained experiences there, but you cannot say that you have learned a lot about the country.
I like the photo taken through the airplane window very much. The mountain range looks indeed very enticing.
Were the croissants tasty?
I remember that in Laos and Cambodia they also have French baguettes but I think you should stick with the Asian food :)
So your main photo was taken at the international airport. Do you also have a picture of a cafe in Almaty itself?
Best regards, Paul

Hi Kasia,
Interesting and tasty with french croissants ! good quality for your photon sharpness and light and concerning your question ... of course, difficult to tell to know a country with only a short trip ...

Hi Kasia
Given that new countries don't appear on TE maps anymore it won't be too obvious that you only got airport photos.
The photo is fine and I hope that the croissants were OK.
cheers

Hello Kasia,
A photo from inside the airport or from an airplane wouldn't qualify you to have been to a certain country, but the way you describe your visit to Kazakhstan certainly means you have been there. With very little experience, yes, but you didn't spend those hours in the neutral ground of the airport terminal. With a stamp in your passport you have entered the country. So if I were Paul I would count Paraguay and Argentina among my countries, just like I myself count Zambia and Switzerland, although after very brief visits.
Having said all this I note that you left Kazakhstan with a small handful of good photos. The main photo is the winner with its colours, details and neat composition.
Kind regards,
Gert

Ciao Kasia, your questions make me think a little about Malgo, when she jumped the borders just to put another box on the map of the countries visited .. ehhee .. Obviously you have been there but a stop at the airport is definitely not a visit to the country . Anyway show us something interesting, I really like the aerial view and also the modern structure of the airport.Obviously the main pic is a great gift for a barman as me! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Kasia,
I had to smile when I read your notes. There is a quiz game on TV and one of the sections is called 'Where is Kazakhstan?', where the contestants have to mark places on a map. No-one is quite sure where Kazakhstan is on the map, hence the name of the section!
Maybe you haven't explored the snow-topped mountains but, you have spent a night in a hotel and taken some interesting shots from the airport so, perhaps it does count as a visit. But ... the site is no longer marking places you have visited, on your map, so no worries there!
I would not have guessed that this was a shop in an airport. It looks like some charming street cafe.
I do like the view over the city. Maybe you will get there one day.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Kasia, you ask an interesting question, I suppose if you have actually set foot in the country, then technically you have been to that country.
Three interesting pictures.
I like the main picture , the croissants look very inviting.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Kasia,
A good and well cropped photo of the French bakery in Kazakhstan. I guess they can be found everywhere in the world, but the Kazakh words add a local touch to the photo, even with the Eiffel Tower in the middle. The bright yellow colours are appealing as well.

Czesc Kasiu,
Swietna scenka,

Hi Kasia,
Well presented deli on the airport. Your framing is just right. It wasn't busy that time. Your note is more interesting though. Let's say that counts as a visit, but doesn't give you bragging rights :)

Czesc Kasiu!
Surprised that I can still read the Cyrillic script from years ago, after several months spent wandering around Mongolia, Russia, Transnistria and Bulgaria. Usually with me, it's use it or lose it! Looks like a quiet, clean place to enjoy a coffee and croissant! Tfs!

Hi dear Kasia
How are you? You seem to be so active as same as before.
Yes I understand your points. I have same experiences so many.
Canada, Spain and United Arab Emirates belong to that category, hahaha. This shot is very simple but along your way and style as natural.
All the best and have a good day! Takero

Hi Kasia.
A magnificent composition of this cafe, in those rooms lightning through airports, very well exposed all the articles and drinks to have a quick drink, very striking poster of the establishment I think in Russian.
Good lighting, color and sharpness.
Enjoy a happy Sunday.
Very best regards.
Luis.

I remember this city in a huge world map I had in my room when I was a boy. I was traveling every day and this town was ever a stop point, because I guessed its name very interesting (Almata) a mix of soul and -kill- in portuguese. haha.
yes, I had such experiences of being in a place and in fact not. I liked the images anyway.
take care
jorge
