Photographer's Note
Day 4
When we arrived at Nong Khiaw we said goodbye to the “Wonderbus” and more importantly our intrepid driver. We dropped off our bags and rushed down to the bridge over Nam Ou, where we were told there would be a stunning sunset. We were too late to catch the sunset, but there was still some attractive colour in the sky and at any time of day the scene is picturesque. Notice how the river bank is cultivated; this is a common practice in riverside villages. When the river rises in the wet season, deposits on the land make it very fertile. You can see at the bottom of the photo where we were to board the boats to take us to Luang Prabang the next morning.
To take the photo I used the bridge for support and set the 2 second timer to eliminate movement when pressing the shutter.

Hi Kath,
nice after-sunset photo, the light reflecting on the water makes the boats more visible, nice result.

Hi Kath,
You may have missed the sunset, but the afterglow is most alluring and effective. I like the POV here, with the river to the left and the land on the right, the village buildings clearly seen and balancing the frame. The little boats add a further point of interest, and the eye follows the curve of the river to take in the rounded hills beyond. The exposure level seems just right. A very fine capture, Kath.

Hi Kath. Despite being a bit late for the party it still is excellent with the great colors. It looks like the polarizer boosted the saturation a bit. I also like how you have the river going around the bend. Very nice catch Kath!

Hi Kath
Great shot from the bridge. I was in Nong Khiaw on 10th Jan and can still relive the scene. I had taken a similar shot & it has come half as good as yours. A pity the far end where the river bends, becomes hazy because of the smoke, I understand.
Thanks for making me revisit

You did well, Kath, given the lighting conditions and lack of tripod. rendering this idyllic scene even more so as what I can remember of the Nong Khiaw was anything but idyllic. The entire village was out of water when we were there - no water to cook, no water to wash - I'll lave the rest to your imagination I was glad to be leaving on the boat.

Serwus Kath !
The ambiance just after sunset is sometimes more appealing. This is surely a proof. I love the softness of the scenery, and almost hear the silence. I appreciate this is not just another landscape, but very informative, well carried compo.
Thank You and have a nice day,

Too late for sunset but still on time to make a great shot. The light is still just fine to give good results and you have a pleasant colour pallette in the sky. Have a nice weekend.

Too late for the sunset maybe, Kath, but you've captured some nice colour in the sky and this may well be a better image than if you had tried for the sunset, because with the shorter exposure there would have been much more shadow in the foreground and you wouldn't have seen all the detail in the bottom right hand corner of the photograph. Excellent sharpness for just resting the camera on the bridge. Cheers . . . David

Hi Kath
I always find the time after the sun sets as more beautiful for taking photos rather than the time when it is exactly setting.
I love the details and the very tranquil colours that you seem to have captured in this photo.
very impressive indeed

Great shot. Not too late for sunset at all. If anything you managed to capture those last few seconds when the sun is gone but that warm glow still lights the horizon. Really nice shot.
