Nature in Macro #03, a photo from Johor, West

Photographer's Note

Hello to all TE members. This is the third post of the “Nature in Macro” photo series, which was shot at Gunung Ledang in Johor on the 20th of March to 22nd of March.

And here I’ve the third post dedicated to our friend from Sabah, Pak Bani, the true photographer whom are able to cover all fields, from the river to the sea, from the mountain up to the peak, from the open fields of paddy to the stage of traditional performer. A very diversified camera guy.

Hey Pak Bani, it’s an honor to get to know you through TE.

Alright folks, let me continue with this shot, a very common insect from the mountain. I don’t know what it’s called. And I hope somebody out there would be able to help me out in naming this little creature.

For me, before executing every shot which have came to my contact, I will make study of the surrounding to enable me to get the correct angle. And that includes the sufficient natural lighting, as well. As you know, the forest is covered with tall rising trees which have covered the ground in less lighting; most probably of getting an under-exposed image is very high. And not wanting to come back for a second shot, this PRINCIPLE of my thinking is to get the BEST from the first shot, AT ONCE!

I've noticed that you have posted three images from the series, and every one of them have a different approach.
But overall, I prefered the first one.
This one is cool, too. Angled from the rear of the insect and capturing it without been bothered!

Eric a little darker in lighting than your previous macro series, but this one I can see is taken with a bounce flash approach which adds nice depth to this macro. Sorry I have no idea what kind of insect you have here. Good results are clearly seen in this one..thanks for sharing!

Hi Eric, It looks that you have well dug into the insect world. This is a well focused shallow DoF macro shot of the portrait to the cricket.

I’m glad TOS did exile this series of Nature in Macro to TrekNature for than I had missed it (I hardly ever look there) and than I think I had missed this little monster. It’s a beautiful monster very well captured in this picture.

A One more shot/lesson from you...
It really inspires me looking at your shot & is always a tremendous learning experiece...
The Contrast achived in sucha macro is fantastic & the DOF is superb!...
Again, your Management of light in such condition leaves everything for desire..

Hi Eric,
A nice shot of this innocent looking creature, though in ancient China people have been taking its fighting prowess for entertainment. The highlight from the flash did help to add brilliance to the colours and the touch of high pitch cause some excitement. A wonderful shot!! All the best.

Well, I'm not a specialist in macro photo but it's always fascinating to see these kind of pictures. Have you seen this french documentary movie called "Microcosmos" ?
On the picture, there are here and here little parts of the insect a bit blur. But we see well other details.
It seems that the insect has just finished to dinner ! (part of the leaf eaten).

Hi Pak Eric.
Thank you. It is an honor to be recognized by my own countryman, of the same field. But we all ulat, photography is just a way, a method, a medium. What count is the multivaried subjects around us. Or simply being outdoor among what is called Nature.
Here, you used the same street technique. Get in close but not close enough to be a distraction. Just close enough to be a part of nature itself, among its challenging light and atmosphere. While certain subjects require brightness to see its detail, there are other subjects, which require shadows and a little of light, to draw a lot more interest. Photography is about choices; either you shoot for a science textbook/magazine or, an artistic attention getting work. Here, you make a mysterious setting for a cricket with its twilight ambience. In wildlife, you just can't get or complain with whatever light you have; you just have to make do, the best of it. And you did Eric.

Though I'm not a specialist in macro photo it's always fascinating to see these kind of pictures. Amazing details are visible...I wonder how the cricket (looks like one) did not run for cover when your flash lit

Hi Eric. Sometimes difficult to get attention here for macro shots here, but ... This is good because it is sharply focussed on the insect and the background is very neutral. Unfortunately the view is a bit distracted by the leave (?) in front. Difficult to get a macro shot right first time; it demands a lot of patience to get good focus and placing of the insect (they are not so easy models ;-)). Nice work and CU!

In my humble opinion, this picture needs more Depth of Field. I can see the head and legs are blur. Just cannot see a clear whole cricket
