Photographer's Note

Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, Patan.

This young nun at the Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple) in Patan came running up to me as soon as I walked in, demanding to be photographed. She then took me by the hand and took me on a tour of the temple, not expecting anything in return. I'm sure she spun those prayer wheels for all the camera-titing tourists, and why not? She made a wonderful model - just look at that beautiful face.
I only took one frame - nowadays I'd probably have taken several from various angles - but I think the one-shot approach can often capture the spontaneity of a moment a lot more effectively. I'd have preferred it without that other woman just entering the frame behind the prayer wheels though. Never mind.
I often wonder about the people I've photographed in the past - how they've changed over the years, how their lives are going. I took this in '96, so she must be in her mid-twenties by now. I wish her all the best.
