Photographer's Note
Despite this station being called Aeroport it is not the metro station for the Moscow airport. It is a station on the Zamoskvoretskaya line and it takes its name form the Khodynka Aerodrome, Moscow's first airport, which is no longer in operation.
It was built in 1938 as part of the second stage of the metro development. It was built using the cut-and cover method, as opposed to the tunnelling method. Concrete segments of the vault were pre-cast and then lowered into the station.
It is an example of Soviet Art Deco architecture. It is striking due to the network of intersecting ribs that fan out across the vaulted ceiling. These ribs stem upwards from fan-shaped limestone panels spaced at regular intervals along the walls, which are red and brown marble. This marble apparently came from the Urals. Just like I travelled from Perm, nr the Urals, to Moscow; so did the marble!
Enjoy.

Great effect inside the old-airport station, Michael. Light and view through its length while empty from passengers allow to see its magnificent archi.-design.
Well done photojob.

Hello Mike,
This is both eerie and beautiful. It would be a great setting for a suspenseful movie scene. I love the way you captured this amazing ceiling. The depth, the lighting, everything is perfect. I like Art Deco, and this design is really striking.

Metropolis, worlds collide, ain't nobody on either side of the platform! Or do I spot some human presence in the far distance?
Great shot, Mike. I absolutely love the retro futuristic feel to this picture.

Hello Mike,
I think there is someone from the FSB approaching you at the far end of the platform. I'm glad to see you got away. Obviously you had to get up before dawn for this shot too. The emptiness underscores the strangely megalomaniac atmosphere. Actually the design is quite beautiful, so it's mainly the size that creates the slightly unpleasant feeling I get. Size really mattered a lot to Stalin. Again a marvellously well composed and perfectly sharp photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Mike,
How have you found this beautiful station? I also made a research before going to Moscow about the most interesting stations but I haven't seen this one. I like this ceiling very much. The station seems rather small. Excellent composition.

Hello Michael,an impressive ceiling made even more so by your point of view and the lighting. Also the lack of people gives it atmosphere.
An interesting note.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hello Mike
A Stalinist cathedral! And I'll bet this isn't the 30 secs exposure quoted in the Photo Info box.

Perfect work. Almost no people in sight, which is quite rare thing in Moscow.

Hi Mike
you know what this one is like? its like you stepped directly onto the MOTHER ship of some alien race. Oh man, that would be cool, as long as I have my camera with me haha
the best part has to be the area at the very top, where it has that 3D look to it and where the lines intersect.
its awesome from top to bottom, and I like the dimmed lighting too. Beam me UP!
cheers
