Photographer's Note
This photo is of a juggler at Everland Theme Park. He was performing in the street. I took lots of photos and I have another photo of him here in Trek Earth.
This photo is the first in a series of black and white photos, with a touch of colour. They're all photos I've taken in colour, but converted to black and white to achieve this effect.
I don't know if this effect has an official name though. If you know what this technique is called, please let me know ... Ok, so, how did I do it?
Easy!
Step 1: open the photo in photoshop.
Step 2: create a new layer that's a copy of the original layer.
Step 3: make the new layer black and white (shift+ctl+u is the hot key method)
Step 4: use any method you prefer to "cut out" the part of the picture you want to be colour. i use a combination of the magnetic lasso, pen tool and magic wand tool.
Step 5: zoom in to an extreme magnification to clean up the small spots.
Step 6: profit.
Basically, you're cutting holes in the black and white photo to let the colour photo come through. very simple.
I've done a few of these now, just to practice the effect and find out how it works and what looks good. I'll upload a few more because I intend to make it into a theme!
Critiques are definitely welcome!

Hi David, and thanks for telling us how to do that in photoshop!!! (Wow, I never even thought of doing that with photoshop before...) Very nice photo and effects you've given it here. The juggler has a great look of concentration on his face- I like that he's slightly off centre and we can see the background adding to the festive theme. Thanks for sharing both the photo and technique! :)

Hi David, liking your Everland photos so far, keep it up! Nice capture and use of the color in the juggled items, framing his intensely focused face in doing so.

Hi David,
This is great not just because of the technique you have used but the black and white is very good as well, a really crisp clear shot with perfect contrast. I like it very much.

Hey there David,
This is very effective and your note extrememly useful - especially as I'm trying to get into layers myself!
Cheers,

Hi David,
Excellent catch of that dynamic scene. I really like the B&W work highlighting the patterns. The technique you used here seems to me as a good idea, but it would be nice to see also the original version (maybe as a workshop).
By the way, you have some nice shots in your portfolio.
