Photographer's Note

My first taste of poverty was on a trip to a small Guatemalan town. I went with a group of friends to build a second floor to their school. In the midst of the jungle, with an active volcano just 10 miles away, I learned what we are missing in Canada.

These people showed me that your economic situation does not have to affect how happy you are. These people have almost nothing, and will share it all. People who live under leaky roofs made of discarded metal, squatting on other people's land. People in these situations truly hold the secret to happiness.

This school is a gift to the town, money was raised to pay for the building. We went down to build it, not to save money to learn for ourselves how others live. The school once built receives government funding, and access to diplomas. These things will help the next generation to build the city up, I only hope they don't forget to bring the joy and happiness with them.

The picture was taken with $20 film camera, and then scanned. Perfection of the picture was not my goal, feel free to do a workshop on it, I just wanted to share it.
