Shadow in the light, a photo from Carinthia, West

Photographer's Note

I spent the last week in Carinthia, Austria. We went skiing and stayed in Seeboden, at Milstätter See. We discovered two skicentrums: Goldeck at Spittal and Innerkrems.

This photo was taken on the first day in Goldeck, from the top of the 2142m high Goldeck peak. One of the lifts took us up to the symbol of the mountain, to the TV tower. There're 11km easy, 9km medium and 10km difficult pistes.

That day was quite windy there, the wind blew the snow and the sun tried to shine through the clouds. This lonely skier just got out of the lift at the peak. (You can't see the lift in the photo because I zoomed! :P)

Hello Marton!
Splendid shot! I like the way the frontal light is enhancing every detail in the snow, from the nearest FG to the blowing snow at the edge back there. Lovely composition too, the skier up to the left, a bit dramatic sky, and silhouetted mountains in the BG. I think B&W was a good choice here, because its making the effects I mentioned above more visible. Very good DOF.

Hey Marton

This photo confuses me a little, I'm expecting to see a white snow there, wait for me a bit to cross over the limits of the expectations. Passover. I can now feel the magic of the black snow and all the drama going on there. I like that u included a mountain there so we can get the picture that u were standing on a high spot there. Putting the skier on the very edge was a smart thing to do, even the cropped shadow works well. U're one of the rare that gets maximum from cameras like yours, ve'been there, done that, mine (LZ2) didn't handle well strong lights. Yes, b&w was perfect here and the two white lines are stroking!

Hi Marci,

Superb low-key shot of this amazing place. The wind is evident from the snow blast behind the skier. Excellent tones throughout but a little detail in the conical mountain on the right might have helped the balance. Excellent shot.

Did you use high contrast blue filter here? Whatever you did, the result is definitely amazing. Heavy grey and black tones create a great atmosphere, sense of loneliness and freedom - despite the gloomy mood - and I love it! Especially the diagonal line drawn by sunlight and the line the skier is standing on are eyecatching. Very well done, congrats.

Hú, ez olyan baljós és drámai, mintha egy vesztett csatából menekülő hegyivadásszal találkoztál volna! A komor felhők, a világosból a sötétbe (=bizonytalanba, reménytelenbe) tartó alak (lehajtott fejjel) mind ezt a hatást erősíti.
Á, nem megyek én síelni!

Nagyon tetszik a keped. En amugy is szeretem a fekete-feheret, de ennek a fotonak kifejezetten jot tett, igy meg sokkal hatasosabbak a komor felhok, a fenyek es arnyak. Tetszik a sielo fekete alakja es arnyeka, meg meg a fekete hegyek is a tuloldalon.

You must also be feeling deeply that your taste of photography is greatly developing Marci, and nobody can stop you from now on :))
This is like a skier, skiing on the desert next to the pyramids. The atmosphere is so great and 1/1000 darkness in counterlight...PERFECT! Even i can count the snowflakes on the ground. Delicious photography you have done. Appreciation!

Marci ez nagyon durva! Nem tom hogy csináltad, de eszméletlen jó szemed van ezekhez. Nagyon tiszták az árnyékok, egy felesleges elem sincs a fotón. A síző figura pozíciója is sokat ad a kép hangulatához... Ezz.. fantasztikus.
Ezentúl mesternek szólítalak...:P

Wow, Marci it's awesome! I have no idea how could you play with the light in this way, you are very open-eyed. The shadows are clear, there is no spare elements on the photo at all. The position of this fellow make this shot very especial. This is really fantastic...

this is something special marci... the light you cought here is superb... and the position of the skiiers head adds a lot to this atmospheric shot... i wish you could keep the shadow in the frame though...

Gyonyoru varazslatos kep, Marci. I am sure you did a lot of adjusting to achieve this dramatic effect. It has a moon landscape atmosphere.
Lucky for you to ski in Austria! I used to ski there in my younger days (Kitzbuhel).

na most elég nehéz helyzetben vagyok mert egy ritka szép és látványos ff képet látok magam előtt és ráadásul Marci "cyberbarátomtól" és mégis "hasogatom a szőrszálat" (:D. well, honestly, in my opinion this capture is absolutely fantastic! The work of light and wind makes it marvelous, the way you captured and presented it, perfect. Brilliant use of frontal light to show the great characteristics of that day, the great feeling of glowing light. Exceptional!

Hi Marci,
I love the skiing also, and in this photo you make me remember what it is possible to feel before begins a downhill.
I like the attitude of this skier, the difficult cross-light but resolved well, and the effect of the wind on the snow.
The B/W adds an interesting dramatic atmosphere.
