Photographer's Note

Bregenz is famous for their musical festival in late July until mid August. It is a delightful place to visit. Its location on Lake Constance, or Bodensee makes it an ideal location for visiting many of the small ports on the lake in Germany and Switzerland. Bodensee is the third largest fresh water lake in Europe

The first settlements date from 1500 BC. A Celtic tribe named Brigantii is mentioned as a sub-tribe in these region of the Alps in the 5th century BC. After battles in 15 BC, the Romans conquered Brigantion and the city became a Roman camp. It was conferred the status of a municipality (Brigantium) around 50 AD and was the seat of the Roman admiralty for Lake Constance. Much of Brigantium was destroyed by the Alemanni, a Germanic people who settled in the area around 450.

The city was sold in 1451 to the Habsburgs  and continued under Austrian rule, with a brief occupation by Swedish forces during the 30 Years' War,. Since 1726, Bregenz has been the main seat of Austrian administration in Vorarlberg

We have visited here many times in the past 40 years and during the Festspiel in the summer, it is very difficult to find lodgings. There are numerous ferry trips from Bregenz, the farthest to Kontanz in Germany. For the next several days I will post some sights of Bregenz and what one sees as they travel around Lake Constance (Bodensee) Hope you enjoy these lovely villages on this lake.
