Walking around Damme to the south side.

This section marks the southern part of the nature reserve "De Oude Stadswallen", between the Polderstraat and the Zuidervaartje (see also Dammesteenweg, Damse Vaart-West and Polderstraat). From this a first parcel is purchased in 1982; gradually more plots are acquired or taken into management. These are shallow water features, reed beds and swamp forest in the original canals and hay fields and meadows on the ramparts. The presence of, among other things, "marsh fern" and the carnivorous water plant "ordinary vesicle" prove the botanical value of the area. The area is managed by vzw Natuurpunt, which buys a few adjacent fields and meadows in order to be able to close the old defense belt around Damme again. The financing is done through the European project "Euregio Scheldemond / Cross-Border Creeks Area", with the support of the Provincial Nature Fund of West Flanders, the city of Damme and the Ministry of the Flemish Community. This nature reserve is accessed via a pedestrian bridge over the Zuidervaartje that connects to a municipal walking path that connects the Damse Vaart-Zuid with the Kerkstraat and the city center.

Bonjour John,

This is such a typical “low land” landscape! And you made a wonderful composition of it, all the elements are there, Sky and clouds, fields and trees in a row, a pond and and a little river, houses, a tower and church roof...
Sharp, neat image and great point of view, very wel done!

Mooie diagonaal die zigzagt in de verte. Dan die reflectie in de plas en die mooie lucht daarboven. Damme zelf is herleid tot een detail, een toren in de verte. Mooi werkje opnieuw, John. Proficiat!

Hello John,
Another photo from one of the beautiful days in December 2007. As often before you cleverly used the elegance of a strong diagonal, in this case a canal leading up to a long line of trees, which are among the main focal-points of the composition and are also perfectly reflected in the pond. This time you also managed to arrange the clouds diagonally. I wonder how you did that? ;-) The grass has a wonderfully fresh green tone.

Hallo John,
Zulke mooie decemberdagen zitten er dit jaar voorlopig nog niet in. Het heldere licht is heel mooi en zorgt voor aantrekkelijke groene kleuren onder een blauwe lucht. De compositie is uitstekend vooral door het meertje links en de sloot die dwars door het midden loopt.

I think this shot is even better than the one you uploaded yesterday as it has a superb reflection at left. The same lovely textured grass with strong sidelight and the same good density levels and sharpness. The sky here is interesting too with its many clouds. Tfs!

Hallo John,
Verschillende elementen maken deze foto heel mooi.
Het water en de groene weiden zorgen voor een aantrekkelijke voorgrond.
Wat verderop maakt de vaart een bocht naar de mistige bomenrijen toe. Ook de kerktoren wordt door nevel omringt. We herkennen ook nog de toren van het stadhuis.
De zachte wolkjes nemen prachtige vormen aan en zorgen voor een schitterend beeld bovenaan.

Thank you for the accompanying notes. It is interesting to learn about this low, fragile land and how it is managed.
Your photograph is beautiful, especially when seen large, on the Beta site.
I love how you have used the canal, emerging from a bottom corner and leading to the winter tree (neatly reflected in the pool) and the line of misty trees.
The church, and other buildings are very well included in this atmospheric winter's scene.
