Second picture
Saturday very bad weather, during my stroll in Bruges.
I took this picture between two snow showers.
For a nice composition, I have cropped the picture, the traffic signs are disturbing, but I want posting the original picture if workshop.
History of the painter Jan van Eyck:
Jan van Eyck is between approximately 1420 and 1441 revolutionized the history of painting in the Netherlands. Presumably he is trained by his older brother Hubert, whose Ghent Altarpiece he completes in 1432 after the death of Hubert in 1426. Jan van Eyck's work makes an abrupt end to the sophisticated "international style" that dominates the art at that time. With his precise observation and naturalistic representation of reality, its radiant colours and oil painting technique, which he mastered perfectly but not invented, Van Eyck shows a virtuosity that will be equalled hardly. As a diplomat and court painter to the Dukes of Burgundy, he moves his entire life in the highest circles.

BOnjour John,

Hello John,
Jan van Eyck was one of the truly great masters. Few painters deserve a prominent statue more than he. You put it nicely to the side of this composition, giving us a good view of the buildings along the canal behind. I like the inclusion of the two persons sitting on the bench. They contribute to the balance of the photo. To my mind there is no need to explain that you have cropped a photo to make the presentation nicer. That is a natural part of the process. Either you point the camera in a slightly different direction when taking the photo, or you crop unwanted details on the side afterwards.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello John,
The green toned statue of van Eyck makes an interesting focal point and effectively frames the image as a whole. I like very much the line of façades in the background, each one different but all beautiful in their own way. The couple sat on the bench enliven the scene. The snowy weather engenders a pleasant soft light and agreeable understated tones. Sharpness is excellent indeed.

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Hello John,
This is a contrast to many of your other photographs just by its weather conditions. Usually your shots reveal a bright blue sky so this is quite a pleasing alternative. It shows us that Bruges still looks beautiful in the depths of winter.
Though the main focus is the statue, I just cannot help but be attracted by the couple on the bench. It looks to be portraying an act of kindness as a young person assists an older person.
Your crop has not affected the composition, which is very well considered. The statue is strongly placed and links nicely to the seated couple. The b/g, the eclectic mix of tall houses makes a natural guide into the distance. It's a charming scene even with the slate-grey sky.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
a compact composition with great perspective and a solid rhythm. I like how you placed the statue and how its glance met your lens. The repeating patterns are dense and the urban architecture neat and interesting. I like the harmonious colours and the mood as well as the scene added by the people at the bench. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Ourania

Hi John,
The monument is well placed in the frame. The point of view is showing the details of the monument and of the buildings. The grey sky does not hurt the output of the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello John,
Yes, the sky is a bit grey, but the colors of the buildings and of the statue are quite nice. I am trying to imagine how this scene would look during a snow squall. I think you did well to crop the original photo.

Winter ambiance well renderred, though it was not raining as I see the two ladies sit on the bench, John.
Despite very low light condition the outlines of the surrounding architecture's shown with great clarity and interest.
Green (copper-rust)statue well in contrast to the mostly cold-tones facades, yet - a superb take.
My best regards,

Dag John Jan van Eyck seems to suffer of psychologic depression, as well as the seated people, on this rainy day!
Nevetheless your picture and note in connection with the district remains very informative of the local history, especially when masterly captured. Groeten

Hello John, what a bad luck with the snowy weather in Bruges. But the young couple is sitting on the bench. Excellent composition with the view of the Van Eyck monument and nice houses along the canal. I know this place, I have been there too. I like Van Eyck's paintings very much. unfortunately, I haven't seen Het Lam Gods in Ghent, probably St. Bavo was closed for renovation.

Ciao John
hai fatto molto bene a tagliare i cartelli, erano troppo invasivi.

Bedankt,
Elvira
