I took this picture in the afternoon bicycle trip 22 km.
SIJSELE 8 km from Btuges.
The Sint-Maartens church or Sint-Martinus church is the parish church of the town of Sijsele, which is part of the West Flemish municipality of Damme, located on Dorpsstraat.
History
The parish of Sijsele is very old and encompassed a large area, including that of the later Bruges. Before 875 there was probably a place of worship in the form of a castle chapel. Around 862 the parish was donated by the count of Flanders to the Sint-Maartenskapittel in Utrecht.
Presumably in the first half of the 11th century, a Romanesque cross church was built, which had three altars dedicated to Saint Martin, Saint Sebastian and Saint Anna. The church was destroyed in 1578 during the religious struggle. In 1611 the church was somewhat restored, using material from the - also destroyed - Spermalia Abbey. However, the church was again damaged, in 1634 by State troops and in 1676 by French troops.
In the 18th century, the church was regularly restored and the interior embellished. In 1790 work began on the renovation and extension of the church, whereby the choir and two bays were increased. This work had to be stopped in French times, but in 1802 the church reopened, but it now looked curious, for the part just rebuilt was higher than the tower and there was no ceiling. From 1836-1837, the old church was demolished and the renovated church adapted to the already rebuilt part. However, the church soon became too small, and in 1890 the construction of a new, neo-Gothic church began. This church was officially consecrated in 1898.
I hope you like it

Hello John,
This church was a perfect place to visit in Covid days. You seem to have been all alone, so it was very safe. You had time to carefully take a very well exposed and sharp photo using the interior light perfectly. The colours are pleasantly mild and the composition is well anchored by the triple sculpture in the foreground.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo John,
Een prachtige foto van het interieur van de kerk. De zilveren tinten zijn heel mooi en worden extra versterkt door het licht. De gewelven en de brede pilaren staan mooi en duidelijk op de foto.

Hi John,
The length of the nave is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of the interior of the St.Maartens church. The surrounding light is bring out the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello John
A well lit church here. The room is wide and full of character and study. I see what appears to be some sort of reflection on the left of the image and the modern gas heater up front. Love the artwork throughout. nice.

Hi John
Good view point and symmetry achieved for this fine church's interior with lovely arches. The wooden chairs lends a splendid colour contrast but above all its the exposure make this looks so cool..

Hello John, Excellent presentation of this church interior. No one there, is it because of the Covid? Nice columns and the gothic vaults. Nice sculpture on the right side. Strange that there are just chairs and not the benches, as usual (for instance, in the Polish churches). Good composition and light managements. Have a nice day

Hello John,
This church seems to have had a very unhappy history, like many of those featured by Jorge in his visit to Russia! It has suffered many damaged phases and much rebuilding.
You have achieved a bright and sharp interior photograph, the sculpture well positioned in the f/g and the repeating pillars creating a fine sense of depth and perspective.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
Perfect sharpness and nice repetition of the sturdy columns with their Corinthian capitals. The stained glass windows add a splash of colour in the bg. Tfs!

Hallo John,
Deze kerk laat heel wat licht van buiten toe.
Je zeer heldere foto toont een vrij breed interieur waarin de zuilen, bogen en het plafond onze aandacht vragen.
Uitstekende scherpte en compositie.
Vele groeten, Paul

What a magnificent view of a church architectural details, captured with an hand-held camera by natural lighting!
The vaulted ceiling is so high that it can keep prisoners the scents of incense for a while!
