Photographer's Note

Once upon a time

...there was an old shoemaker in Odense and he had a little boy who was clever, but damn ugly. At school the boy was laughed at and ridiculed, but in secret he dreamed of becoming an actor or a famous musician.

But, when the shoemaker died, the little boy's family couldn't afford to send him the school of arts. And the little boy grew into a grumpy adult and a difficult person to deal with, but he didn't give up his dream.

In the privacy of his own little room, he did what he did best, he began to write fantastic stories and fairytales. And he became famous, because those fairytales and stories were really, really good.

And the best known fairytale of all was one about an ugly duckling that at the end of the story turned into a beautiful swan.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805-1875) was born in Odense, just around the corner from where this picture was taken.

ODENSE is the biggest city on the central island of Funen (Fyn). The name of this pleasant university town refers to the ancient Norse god Odin. In the middle ages the shrine of Saint Knud in the town's cathedral attracted many pilgrims. Today its main claim to faim is it being the birthplace of one Hans Christian Andersen.
