The path along the ramparts takes you past these old tree gods. The trunk of an dead tree has been carved to represent one of the Norse gods. There are three and a small brass tag identifies the god it's meant to represent.

Fredericia is a strategically located fortress town equipped with exceptionally good ramparts, established to protect routes to the islands. The fortress was planned as a new capital and included canals and a royal castle. The town was the first in Denmark to be designed by an architect and includes a grid work of straight streets that allowed guards a clear line of fire across town.
To populate the town, King Frederik 111 granted citizens special privileges such as tax exemption, freedom of religion and the right of asylum. This resulted in a ‘heady cocktail’ of law-abiding and hard-working residents, members of persecuted religious communities, thieves and tax evaders.
