Photographer's Note

Yesterday was a wonderful winter day in South Finland. In Espoo sunny, -4C, a little windy, but ideal for a walk. I went in the afternoon for a walk along a so called Rantaraitti outdoor trail which follows the Espoo shoreline. This shot is one of those I took during my walk. The island on the left is a very small island with a couple of summer cottages. Amazing place so near the city for the cottages! The strait separating the island from the mainland is only 30 metres wide at this place. The ices are really thin and weak although cold period has lasted about 3 weeks now, being though a rather mild cold period.

Rantaraitti is an outdoor trail that follows the southern shore of Espoo all the way from Laajalahti to Saunalahti. Glimpses of urban dwellings and lush, intimate patches of nature interchange along the trail, as it winds along shoreline parks, boat harbours and beaches.

Planning of the Rantaraitti trail began already in the 1970s and a total of 27 kilometres of trail are open for use today. In the years to come, five kilometres of new trail will be added, with five more planned for a future date. After these additions, the Rantaraitti trail will navigate the entire Espoo shoreline.

There are many other points of interest along the Rantaraitti trail, besides beaches and boat harbours, including piers with departures to the outlying islands and several towers for birdwatching. The city’s Nature House Villa Elfvik is located along the trail, as are the Villa Museum Rullud and the old Karhusaari Villa.
