Photographer's Note

LES BOULES ARGENTEES ("the silver-plated balls") is a fountain installation by the Belgian artist Pol Bury (1922-2005). It is located on the interior court of the Palais Royal in Paris.

This particular installation was installed in this location in 1985, near the more famous pillars of Daniel Buren.

The Palais-Royal is a former royal palace opposite the Louvre in the centre of Paris. It was built in the 17th century for Cardinal Richelieu.

Now it serves as the seat of the Ministry of Culture, the Conseil d'État and the Constitutional Council. The central Palais-Royal Garden (Jardin du Palais-Royal) serves as a public park, and the arcade houses shops.

Hello Benny,
You used this opportunity to post several selfies under the pretext of showing a work of art. ;-) Rob Zwemmer and I have both showed a similar, and probably much larger, installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. I guess you don't need to be a unique genius to realize that perfectly polished metal spheres produce amusing reflections.

Hello Benny,

You were quite rightly attracted to this sculpture because it offers so much as a photograph: the repeating shapes, the smooth, silvery textures and of course, the wonderful reflections, each slightly different.
It reminds me of a similar sculpture created by Anish Kapoor, which I saw in London.

What a spectacular array of huge reflecting balls, when compared to the size of the columns at backdrop!
I noticed a strange oddity: I can see three YOU taking the picture but none bears exactly the same exact posture due to space distortion on the wide angle reflected images :)
Amusing physics!

Ik tel een vijftien tal van die mooie bollen
Waarvan er drie zijn waar de vermoedelijk de fotograad te zien is.
De wolken structuur zorgt voor een aangenaam contrast.

Hallo Benny,
Deze lijkt wel een beetje op mijn laatste foto, maar hier waren het heel wat meer spiegelende ballen. Vooral de witte wolken in de blauwe lucht worden prachtig gespiegeld samen met de warme tinten van de zuilengalerijen.

A fascinating concept with the fun of distorted reflections when the steely balls are grouped together like this! I like the close up especially they shows off the reflective image of the photographer's talent under that fantastic cloud formation. I feel there's a hypnotic effect to it and sure has great impact. I appreciate your intro with the information there, the subject looks great in this presentation.

Hello Benny, we have no reference as to the actual size of the balls; are they the normal size of boules that we play with?
I like this composition with the bases of some pillars in the background.
The cloudy blue sky is eye catching.
