Photographer's Note

The Arc du Triomphe was hard to get a shot at with all the people and trafic. When I came back later it was in the last fading light and I took this compressed perspective with the street sign for Place Charles de Gaulle instead. This is a full color picture in dusk light.

Building of the arch started in 1806 and it is a victory symbol for Napoleons wars. It is 50 m high and 45 m wide and was designed by Chalgrim. It was finished as late as 1936.

In the space between the four columns is the grave of the unknown soldier and there are also plaques with the names of 660 generals and 128 battles.

The square around it was renamed after general de Gaulle after his death in 1970.
