Photographer's Note

Lourdes is a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for the Marian apparitions occurred in 1858 to a teenager named Bernadette. This view is taken from the tower of a fortified castle in the centre of the town. The large green area in the middle of the picture is the roof of a very unusual church, the Basilica of Pius X. It was consecrated in 1958 in an enormous underground chamber covered by a concrete roof, it's 198m long and 81m wide, and can holds 20,000 people. It's one of the world's largest churches.
