Wrapped

Time for a break in my summer series now, for a picture taken just yesterday. I spent this weekend in Paris (drove there last Friday after work and back this afternoon), specifically to see the art project “L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped” by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. For three weeks, the Arc de Triomphe is wrapped in a silver-blue fabric.

Christo, known for wrapping other public monuments like Pont Neuf (1985) and the Reichstag (1995), already thought of this project in 1961. It has now been carried out by a relative posthumously, after Jeanne-Claude died in 2009 and Christo in 2020. 30,000 square metres (recyclable) fabric has been used and 7,000 metres of red rope. The square around the Arc de Triomphe, Place Charles de Gaulle, is closed for traffic during the three weekends the art installation takes place.
