Mainhattan

At the end of last summer’s trip we spent to rather cloudy and sometimes rainy days in the city of Frankfurt am Main. This photo shows the central business district in the city, called Mainhattan, a combination of Manhattan, a reference to the many high rises, and Main, the river on which Frankfurt lies. It is one of the major financial centres in Europe and home to the European Central Bank. Two of the tallest towers in this photo are the Main Tower (200 m, the round blue one with the antenna at right) and the Commerzbank Tower (258 m, the largest one in the middle). The building in the middle is called the Hauptwache (Main Guardroom), a baroque building from 1730.

Frankfurt am Main (the last bit is added to distinguish the city from Frankfurt an der Oder on the German-Polish border) is the fifth-most populous city in Germany (just over 760,000 inhabitants) and the largest in the state of Hesse.

Hej Lars,
Jag har bytt flyg i Frankfurt många gånger men bara sett stan från luften, och då syns ju verkligen Mainhattan. Det var bra att du fick med några andra byggnader också, och förstås två personer i orange i förgrunden.

I liked the contrast between the modern skyscrapers and the old house. nice inclusion of the pedestrians in movement. such not tourist cities can have nice surprises for photographers.

Hello Lars,

This is so different to the period buildings that you have shared recently. The tall skyscrapers do remind us of the modern aspects of cities, which are tall and angular. I am not disparaging the buildings for they have their own dynamics.
The many figures, striding purposefully, add to the busy atmosphere.
Not a bright, sunny day but still very well exposed to give a sharp, interesting picture.

Hello Lars,
The cute building in the foreground proves that you did not misspell Manhattan as Mainhattan. In Istanbul the district of Maslak has the most high rise buildings. One of those is actually called Mashattan.

Hello Lars, the grey day does not detract from this view of Mainhattan.
I like the point of view where you have made a good feature of the brick built building with its unusual roof and windows.

I have heard that name before. So very appropriate. My wife just returned from a business trip to Frankfurt but sadly I cannot use her photos on TrekEarth. She had a better weather than you.

I recognized the silhouette of the skyscrapers even in the thumbnail size. It made be confused, because the title suggested another place. Than I realized the play with the words in your title. So I had to fave it. :)

Dit is dus je eerste foto van Frankfurt. Die had ik gemist en ja deze foto toont me een beeld zoals ik me Frankfurt voorstel.
Je hebt toch nog een bijzonder gebouw op de voorgrond kunnen plaatsen.
De vele voetgangers en het groen in het midden zorgen voor een aangenaam beeld van Duitsland's financiële hart.

A magnificent composition, with a mixture of buildings from different moments of the city's past, without a doubt the greatest contrast is between the modern skyscrapers and this beautiful house from the 18th century, people walking and the terrace gives a nice vital touch.
Very nice color, which together with good sharpness and optimal lighting, gives great quality to the image.

Hello Lars,

I like this name "Mainhattan". Interesting mixture of the new and old architecture. The couple in orange is quite eyecatching. I remember this place too. There is much to see in frankfurt. Impressive Commerzbank Tower.
