Photographer's Note
Nine months after the floodings of July 14, 2021, I found occasion to visit the sites which were probably most severely stricken.
This is the village of Altenahr, famous among (foreign) tourists for its picturesque situation inside a very narrow valley - which meant a death sentence.
Ahr river (the little bit downstairs) was so high that it did not only flow through the street tunnel (beside the railway tunnel in the background) which is 4 or 5 m above normal gauge. No - the tunnel itself was filled almost to its top, meaning a total gauge of approx. 9 m where 0.5 m is common.
All restaurants are destroyed, you won't even get a decent cup of coffee now - but it seemed to me that two are about to reopen in two or three months.
Craftsmen and donations are still urgently needed and welcome.
To be continued.
