Photographer's Note

The photo shows the frozen river Eider near Rendsburg. The Eider river landscape is the largest lowland area in Schleswig-Holstein. It is characterised by rivers, peat lands, moors and grassland; and it is registered in the list of wetlands of international importance.

The winter in Europe again is unusually cold. Starting at the end of November heavy snowfalls and weather warnings took place. A persistent weather pattern brought cold moist air from the north and saw many parts of Europe experiencing record low temperatures. This led to a widespread transport disruption.
Everyone has their favorite season; but for most people, that’s not winter! Nevertheless winter is a joyous season: first of all there are no bugs. Flies, gnats, mosquitoes, bees, wasps, spiders, – they all go away in winter. Then there is snow. Frozen water comes in many forms, but they’re almost all conducive to all kinds of winter sports. Last but not least it is the pristine beauty of a snow-covered landscape. Every time it snows, it is as if a few new brushstrokes were made by an artist upon a canvas.
