Photographer's Note

The castle name "Lembeck" is derived from Old German language. You can translate it as "Lehm-Bach", suggesting the former site of the castle in the middle of a swamp and marshland.

With Adolf of Lembeck a knight of that namethe castel is mentioned for the first time in 1177. His family, the Lords of Lembeck, exercised jurisdiction over the castle and the administrative district.

Dietrich Conrad Adolf von Westerholdfrom-Hackfurt re-built in the period from 1670 to 1692 the castle to one of the largest water castles of the Münsterland. West of the castle a baroque garden in the French style was created with symmetrical paths axes by August Reinking .
