Hamburg HafenCity is located on the Elbe river islands formerly called Kehrwieder and Wandrahm. It's a project of urban regeneration where the old port warehouses are being replaced with hotels and shops, office buildings and residential areas.

When finished it will be home to about 12,000 people and the workplace of 40,000 people; mostly in office complexes. The prospect for completion is not very clear, but is estimated around 2020-2030.

The building to the right is the new concert hall - Elbphilharmonie called "Elphi" (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) - being built on top of an old warehouse. It is said, that it will be the tallest inhabited building of Hamburg with a final height of 110 meters (360 ft).

Construction started in April 2007 and was scheduled to be finished by 2010 with an estimated cost of 241 million euro. In August 2012 the cost were re-estimated to be over 500 million euro and in December 2014 construction work is scheduled to end in October 2016 at a cost of 789 million euro.

And eventually, the opening date is set to January 11, 2017.
