Photographer's Note
The city of Monschau (or Montjoie - which was the official name until 1918) can be found in the very southwestern corner of Northrhine-Westphalia, only a few kilometres from the Belgian border. In fact, there is foreign territory within the municipal borders as the abandoned Venn railway line is completely Belgian, even when there are no more tracks which would justify that, turning some Montjoie hamlets into German exclaves.
Montjoie was a centre of first class textile industry which required fine wool imported from abroad, but offered much income by europe wide exportation. Many mansions still give testimony of the town's golden age.
