Photographer's Note

In 400 B.C. there was a case of emergency eisphora(special tax on property). The intention was to pay off the public debt contracted during the civil war between the Thirty Tyrants and the democrats after the end of the Peloponnesian War. However in the final decades of Athenian independence, 347/6-323/2 B.C., an annual standing property-tax of just ten talents was imposed so that shipsheds could be constructed.
Much more recently, Athens has been hit hard by the late-2000s recession and central to the related European sovereign debt crisis. The Greek economic crisis and resultant, sometimes violent protests have roiled domestic politics and regularly threatened European and world financial-market stability in 2010-11.
2400 years passed , same problems, same people.
