Sailing into Paradise, a photo from Kyklades, South Aegean

Photographer's Note

Ultimately, photography is about light! It was only 6:00 in the morning, an ungodly time in my worldview, but I happened to be up working. Fortunately, I had chosen the Palm Court of the elegant cruise ship the Crystal Symphony to sequester myself when I witnessed this heavenly sunrise. (This lounge on the top deck of ship features a wrap-around windshield and offers a panoramic view.) This is the sort of sky that the 18th Century French painters Francois Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard and the Italian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo used to imagine. As the ship sailed into the bay at Mykonos, the sky lit up in a symphony of colors. Later it would become overcast... and then rain most of the morning. But how lucky was I that I had my iPhone 6 Plus with me to record that fleeting scene! Maybe Boucher, Fragonard, and Tiepolo did see sunrises and sunsets like this after all!

Maybe not quite. You write that it started raining afterwards. But the late sleepers have missed this anyway.

That is a staggering sight! The sky is boiling like there is battle in the heavens. You were indeed fortunate to have your camera to catch this, and the positioning and locational contrast to the modern ship below is beautiful.

Indeed, a spectacular sunrise, pity it turned into such a lousy day:-) The structure of the ship adds a nice graphical touch to the composition. The reflections in pool are an added bonus.

Your picture has a lot of facets, the swimming pole in foreground, the lights and the seats care for a pleasant picture, taken before the rain starting.

An astonishing combination of natural and artificial light. Your right, photographing is all about light, but you have seldom the possibility to find a combination liker this.
I think 6 o’clock in the morning is a fair price for it.

Wow, nice place to work indeed, even if it was very early in the morning. It is astounding what today's mobile phones are capable of. The light was sublime, the sky with those clouds and the red of the rising sun.
