Descenting the stairs of the castle of Naxos after strolling in it,I saw this spectacular view,during the blue hour.Straight ahead of the narrow path on the far end, there is a well lighted 'Π'.This is Portara,great door,looking firt someone entering the port of Naxos. Portara means the great marbled entrance of a temple dedicated to the God Apollon, that never build.

The Venetian Castle

The city of Naxos is one of the most beautiful cities of Greece. Naxos has been under the Venetian influence for over centuries. All over the city you can see many pieces of Venetian architecture. The Venetian Castle, Naxos is one of the main recommended tourist destinations.

The castle is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful architecture of the Cycladic villages. The beautiful architecture of the castle Naxos reflects an authentic and traditional character. You can sense a strong local flavour as soon as you step into the castle. The construction of the castle started following the orders of Marco Sanudo. The conquered the Cyclades in 1207. Naxos Island became the seat of the Duchy of the Aegean. the Castle was built after the 4th crusade.

The castle was the residence of Sanudo. Side by side there were various institutions and administrations of the dutch in the castle. The castle was designed by an engineer. The pentagonal shape of the Naxos Castle is its main characteristic. The Castle was built following Venetian style. Located close to it are a number of mansions, beautiful buildings, monuments and churches constructed on the paved narrow streets.

The Venetian Castle, Naxos is identified as one of the landmarks of the city. The Castle is a beautiful and charming place to visit. The castle still retains a medieval atmosphere. Visitors coming to the Naxos Venetian Castle can see the Archaeological Museum of Naxos. The Museum displays many archaic things dating back to 5th and 6th century BC. There is also an old Jesuit Commercial school housed in the premises of the Castle. Located at the southwestern gate of the Kastro or the castle is the The "Barozzi" House. Still today it is the property of the family. The Barozzis were one of the few families who founded Venice.
