Monemvasia

Monemvasia (Greek: Μονεμβασία) is a town and a municipality in Laconia, Greece. The town is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. The seat of the municipality is the town Molaoi.

The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning "single entrance". Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.

The town today

In 1971, Monemvasia became linked with the rest of the outside world through a bridge on the western side that connects to GR-86.

In more recent history, the town has seen a resurgence in importance with increasing numbers of tourists visiting the site and the region. The medieval buildings have been restored, and many of them converted to hotels.

For the past few years, on July 23, an independence day celebration has been held in the main port. Speeches are made and the story of Tzannetakis Grigorakis, and his men, is recounted in both Greek and English. Inhabitants and visitors can gather to watch as a ship, built every year, is filled with pyrotechnics and set on fire.

The 1986 horror movie The Wind was filmed here.

Hello Danos,
What an amazing photo of this large rock on the small island with even some small houses visible over there as well. It looks impressive and is surrounded beautifully by the blue sky and sea. The rocks in the foreground are also well included.

Hello Danos,
One of the highlights of a visit of the Peloponnese.
Monemvasia is a very remarkable and fantastic place that offers lots of wonderful photo opportunities.
A very beautiful presentation of the general view provided with an attractive foreground with the many big rocks.
Did you climb to the top of Monemvasia? There's a very beautiful church.

Hi, Danos.

A very interesting note, I have never heard of this small island before. Nice panoramic format, sones over stones, until the big one. I am wondering if the locals have enough space to keep goats around or, they must travel inland in search of feta cheese ...:-)

A striking sight of the giant rock-mountain, Danos. Seems to "grow" out of the sea, not "related" to its immediate surrounding.
Good choice to add the rocks on the closer range for depth.

Hello Danos,

Amazing view of this strange high rock in the sea. Nice composition with the big boulders in the foreground. Maybe you could show us also the closer view. I think I see something like the lighthouse on the left side, a few buildings and also house on the top but all these are very small. fascinating place and picture.

Hello Danos,

This big coastal rock has a superficial resemblance to the famed Rock of Gibraltar between Spain and Morocco. Good sharpness and amazing textural details in the fg rocks. Tfs!

Wonderful all around nature beauty with the beach rock formation leading to the deep blue water and from there to the unusual outcrop! creating a beautiful depth on this. The steep rock is spectacular and its is well matched by the rough large boulders on the shore. The light blue sky, the dark blue water and the white surf complete this elegant composition. As usual you show us a photo of excellent clarity and well treated colours.
