Kilkenny Castle, a photo from Kilkenny, South

Photographer's Note

Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 to control a fording-point of the River Nore and the junction of several routeways. Remarkably the castle belonged to same dynasty, the Butlers of Ormonde from 1391 to 1967. Finally Arthur Butler, 6th Marquess and 24th Earl of Ormonde sold the abandoned and deteriorating castle to the Castle Restoration Committee for a ceremonial £50. The castle now belongs to the people of Kilkenny.

Western side of the castle has a rose garden, which obviously is more beautiful in summer.

Hello Kari,
It looks nice enough in early spring. It's a plain view of the fine building but the photo benefits a lot from the presence of the father and child who look fascinated by the water from the fountain blowing their way. I hope they didn't get wet, but maybe the excitement was worth it (at least for the child). The bench fills the foreground well.

Hello Kari,
Now I know that the name Kilkenny is the anglicised version of an Irish name. But I used to wonder how one could call a place 'Kill Kenny'... :)
Beautiful presentation of the castle with the fountain in the foreground where it seems that it is trying to spray the visitors wet.

Hello Kari,
I vaguely remember visiting this castle too, but I believe it was raining so I didn't take (m)any photos and quickly left. You chose a good angle to show the large front façade and its two round corner towers. The gardens added some green tones to the grey backdrop.

Hi Kari,
Lovely capture of this important Irish castle. I think you had a very typical Irish weather there. This place most of the time looks like that. I lived 5 years in Ireland. People so nice, salaries high but the weather quite bad.

Hello Kari, a nicely composed view of the castle with the path coming in from the right hand corner. The fountain is a good foreground feature, and the man and the child are well placed.
It is hard to believe that the castle is so old, thank goodness that it has been successfully refurbished.

I can never get enough of these Castles. I had so much fun driving around Scotland and Ireland. its always hard to believe people living in places like this hundreds of years ago, its so GRANDE, yet there was no such thing as a toilet, its so weird when you think about it. love the photo, standing so proud and powerful in the frame
