Winter Sunset, a photo from Donegal, North

Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: This is Donegal Bay on a clear afternoon last year. I have posted previous shots of the Bay taken from a different location. Being tripodless, the camera was rested on a rock fence, so this shot was my first attempt at a longer exposure. This location is a short walk from Donegal Town. It was icy at that time of year and so I recommend a quick trip to the Abbey Hotel for an Irish Coffee, a Guinness or in my case as I was full of the flu: a hot Jameson's whiskey with cloves.

ITALIANO: Questo è Donegal Bay in un pomeriggio chiara l'anno scorso. Ho inviato scatti precedenti della Baia, preso dal una posizione diversa. Sono stato senza i tripiedi, la fotocamera è riposato su una recinzione pietra, in modo tale questa foto è stato il mio primo tentativo di un'esposizione prolungata. Questa posizione è a pochi passi dalla città di Donegal. Era gelida in quel periodo dell'anno e quindi vi consiglio un salto alla Abbey Hotel per un Irish Coffee, un Guinness o, come nel mio caso io ero pieno di influenza: un whiskey caldo di Jameson con chiodi di garofano.

Hi Lisa,
A fairly universal view. Vegetation shows only as a silhouette, so this could be anywhere with larger areas of water. Maybe that's where the charm lies. You could sit there enjoying the sunset and dream of being somewhere else. Well, in your case you really did, in Ireland!

Tout simplement magnifique !! Ce cadrage où les différents plans s'enchaînent sont parfait, j'aime beaucoup cette opposition d'eau figée au premier plan, puis soudain la surface ridée. Les couleurs sont splendides, très féerique et le contraste avec le sol, parfait.
Vive les vues au coucher de soleil ! un grand bravo à toi.

An image very evocative of a calm winter's evening. A pleasing symmetrical composition with lovely tones and excellent sharpness. I wouldn't mind the Jamesons, but I don't think I would have it hot with cloves, even I did have the flu ;-) Will be thinking of you tonight, when I go to the local bar for a Beaujolais Nouveau evening!

Hi Lisa,
Very calm soothing atmosphere here.
The soft colour tones seems to be laid in layers here.
Begins with the dark, over to the reflective water, the opeque texture of the water, dark horizon, orange that turn to yellowish and finaly the creamish sky. All this makes a preety picture.

Bellissime le tonalità di luce arancioni e il riflesso nell'acqua che a riva sembra uno specchio.

It appears to me that this is one of those spooky place again that you love to venture to get this stunning shot, well composed and I love that gradation of soft colours.

Judging from the number of fantastic low light shots you have posted on TE, I start to get a feeling that you are a specialist nocturnal photographer who manage low light superbly well. My compliments, Lisa

Hello Lisa,
What a sunset! The water is so calm and reflects the colours and the trees so beautifully. Good composition and light management. It is good that only the outlines of the trees are visible: they sit there peacefully not distracting the viewer from enjoying the warm feeling the sunset brings.

anche senza treppiedi sei riuscita a scattare una foto senza il mosso: bravissima!
Le luci sono delizione in tutte le loro sfumature, l'atmosfera piena di pace e di relax. Il freddo non possiamo sentirlo, ma l'invito ad un wiskey caldo con chiodi di garofano lo accettiamoo volentieri!

Hi Lisa.
The warm colour tones are deceptive - when you said afternoon in your note I immediately looked for date taken to discover it was just after Christmas last year. Yet it looks like it could be a mid-summer photo. Except for the bare trees! Slightly strange exposure values, but the picture has worked out beautifully, capturing all the subtle colour tones in the sky and the water. The treed headland and the far one on the horizon create a great sense of depth. Very nice photo, the second Irish one that I've looked at today and they both remind me that I need reminding that I haven't forgotten my one trip there about 30 years ago!

Hello Lisa! I was in Donegal one summer and we had a very bad storm during the night which took some tents into the sea but we survived :)))) Ireland in December? But I must admit, the more I travel the more I want to see places off-season when the crowds have left. Okay, the flu, typical for the Season, but I hope the whiskey helped a little. A beautiful sunset, so peaceful, the place has come to a rest to show its true unspoilt soul. Very good, I love it. Greetings ... Barbara.
