Photographer's Note

While making the popular Ring of Kerry tour, I noticed this ruined tower house off in the distance away from the road. I decided to make a detour and see what I might find.

To me one of the joys of photo-touring a region is supplementing the locations detailed in your guide with the places you just kind of randomly find.

Since it was quite windy at the time I took this shot, instead of waiting for the wind to die down, I decided to use the wind in my favor by using a slower shutter to exaggerate the blurring of the foreground grasses. And since it was very bright at the time, I used a neutral density filter to slow the action down along with a 2-stop graduated color filter to reign the sky in.

County Kerry in Southwest Ireland offers dramatic landscapes and abundant prehistoric and early Christian sites. And the Ring of Kerry tour is a 170km circular loop that provides a good cross-section of what this area has to offer photographically. "The Ring" makes a popular day trip and numerous bus companies offer trips during the summer months.

Regards,
Doug
