Photographer's Note

thi is a view of the sputh side of the large cloister, deiberately shot asymmetrically so as to show some detail of the majestic entrance to one of the single "cells". The large cloister is approx 125 mt long and 100 wide Il chiostro grande è lungo circa 125 metri e largo circa 100. 24 very elegant "cells " or residences open onto the sides , one for each monk and each consisting of three rooms and a small garden
next to the entrancef each cell there is an opening in thwe wall through which the food was swerved. communal meals were in fact permitted exclusively during holdays where all the monks met in the refectory . during weekdays the monks were expected to work and pray in solitude. the columns of the arches are decorated in "cotto" , with effigies and statues of saints , prophets and angels , and are alternatively made in pink and white marble from verona
Unfortunately the original fresco decorations (by Vincenzo Foppa whio received his dues in 1463) portraying prophets and other significant characters have ssince disappeared
