ANZIO (ROME) CHURCH OF SAINTS PIUS AND ANTONIO

In his first visit to Anzio, the Pope Pius IX (1792 -- 1878), on 10.28.1847, he ordered and subsidized the building of a new parish church, to accept the anziate increased population.
Demolished the little church of the harbour, temporarily the divine cult was celebrated in a building of the said harbour "arsenal".
9.14.1851 was placed the first stone, blessed by the Pope himself, for the new church (mt). 36 x 19; h. mt. 17)4.15.1851 had dedicated the Saints Pius and Antonio; then they began the jobs, whose direction was entrusted to the architect Gaetano Morichini, author of the project, in neo-classical style.
9.16.1852 Pius IX wanted coming of person to see the jobs of the church, thing which did also in the May of 1853 and 1855, however regreting not to see it big dark any, how had thought of her. You deliver her to the parson p. Innocenzo urbani 8.1.1856 happened. The complex of particular historical and artistic interest in his position and church character matrix, represents from always the fulcrum of the anziate Christendom.

OUTSIDE: The travertino steps is dominated by a prònao to four columns, surrounded on every side by an artistic railing. Since 2003 for the disabled ones the access to the church has been facilitated by two side ramps. The façade is beautified by four big torciere in marble pasta; in the tympanum he devotes it of the church, while the big papal coat of arms of Pius IX ° dominates in the fastigio. The polychrome glass window of the finestrone depicts S. Antonio of Padua which dominates the harbour. The watch of the bell tower was restored in 1987
It was called to beautify the inside to three naves the decorator Carlo Oglietti (1855).

ANZIO (ROME) CHIESA DEI SANTI PIO E ANTONIO

Nella sua prima visita ad Anzio, il papa Pio IX (1792 - 1878), il 28.10.1847, ordinò e sovvenzionò la costruzione di una nuova chiesa parrocchiale, per accogliere l’accresciuta popolazione anziate.
Demolita la chiesetta del porto, provvisoriamente si celebrava il culto divino in un edificio del porto detto “Arsenale.
Il 14.9.1851 fu posta la prima pietra, benedetta dal papa stesso, per la nuova Chiesa (mt. 36 x 19; h. mt. 17), che il 15.4.1851 aveva dedicato ai Santi Pio e Antonio; così iniziarono i lavori, la cui direzione fu affidata all’architetto Gaetano Morichini, autore del progetto, in stile neoclassico.
Il 16.9.1852 Pio IX volle venire di persona a vedere i lavori della Chiesa, cosa che fece anche nel Maggio del 1853 e del 1855, rammaricandosi però di non vederla più grande, come l’aveva pensata. La consegna al parroco P. Innocenzo Urbani avvenne il 1.8.1856. Il complesso di particolare interesse storico ed artistico per la sua posizione e carattere di chiesa matrice, rappresenta da sempre il fulcro della cristianità anziate.

ESTERNO: La scalinata di travertino è sovrastata da un prònao a quattro colonne, cinto su ogni lato da un’artistica cancellata. Dal 2003 per i disabili l’accesso alla Chiesa è agevolato da due rampe laterali. La facciata è abbellita da quattro grandi torciere in pasta di marmo; nel timpano la dedica della chiesa, mentre nel fastigio troneggia il grande stemma papale di Pio IX°. La vetrata policroma del finestrone raffigura S. Antonio di Padova che domina il porto. Nel 1987 è stato ripristinato l’orologio del campanile
Fu chiamato ad abbellirne l’INTERNO a tre navate il decoratore Carlo Oglietti (1855).
