Grafismo Napulitane, a photo from Naples, Campania

Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: I heard a shocking thing in October when I landed at Capodichino Airport in Naples. A lady I met there said, "Oh, we'll head straight for Sorrento. We don't want to see Naples, it holds no interest for us!" Big mistake, lady.

I'm most certainly biased, so please take this Note with a grain of salt. But to me, Naples is the most amazing city in Italy, possibly the world. I've never seen a city so full of contradictions: ugliness and jaw-dropping beauty; the friendliness and warmth of the traditional Neapolitan, the hard-nosed little street urchins ("scugnizzi") and the Cammorra criminals that are just bad to the bone; poverty and unbelievable wealth; an awesome dynamism, yet a people who are so laid back it's scary. All this at the foot of a volcano so extraordinarily beautiful which makes the land surrounding it so fertile and arable; yet one day promises to wipe out everything in its sight.

And other less biased people have agreed with my humble opinion. Goethe wrote of Naples in his book "Italian Journey":

"I don't want to even think about Rome. By comparison with Naples' free and open situation, the capital of the world on the Tiber flats is like an old wretchedly placed monastery" and

"I could feel how confusing such a tremendous contrast must be. The Terrible beside the Beautiful, the Beautiful beside the Terrible, cancel one another out and produce a feeling of indifference. The Neapolitan would certainly be a different creature if he did not feel himself wedged between God and the Devil".

So I plead with you not to miss this city - you'll either love it or hate it. But it will change you forever.

This is the Galleria Umberto I, a shopping mall in the centre of Naples. Built between 1887 and 1891 as part of the "risanamento" ("making healthy again") it is situated opposite the San Carlo Theatre, Royal Palace, Caffe Gambrinus and also opens out onto Via Toledo, a great place to shop. ITALIANO: Sentivo una cosa scioccante nel mese di ottobre, quando sono atterrato all'aeroporto di Capodichino a Napoli. Una signora che ho incontrato ci ha detto: "Oh, ci dirigiamo dritti per Sorrento. Noi non vogliamo vedere Napoli, che detiene nessun interesse per noi!" Grand Errore, signora!

Sono sicuramente parziale, quindi ti prego, prendete questa nota con un grano di sale. Ma per me, Napoli è la città più sorprendente in Italia, forse del mondo. Non ho mai visto una città così piena di contraddizioni: la bruttezza e una bellezza che lascia la bocca aperta, la cordialità e il calore del napoletano tradizionale, i scugnizzi, amabile ma birichini ed i criminali Cammorra che sono solo male alla ossea; la povertà e la ricchezza incredibile, un dinamismo impressionante, ma un popolo che sono così rilassato è spaventoso. Tutto questo ai piedi di un vulcano così straordinariamente bello, che rende il terreno circostante in modo fertile e coltivabile, eppure uno giorno promette di distruggere tutto nella sua vista.

E altre persone meno parziale sono in accordo con mio opinione umile. Goethe ha scritto di Napoli nel suo libro "Viaggio italiano":

"Io non ci voglio pensare di Roma. In confronto con la situazione libero e aperto di Napoli, la capitale del mondo sui piatti Tevere è come un antico monastero miseramente messo" e

"Ho potuto sentire come confondere un tale contrasto deve essere. Il Terribile accanto il Bello, il Bello accanto il Terribile, annullare l'un l'altro e produrre una sensazione di indifferenza. Il napoletano sarebbe sicuramente una creatura diversa se egli non si sente incuneato tra Dio e il diavolo ".

Quindi, vi supplico di non perdere questa città - che abbiate o si ama o si odia. Ma vi cambierà per sempre.

Questa è la Galleria Umberto I, un centro commerciale nel centro di Napoli. Costruito tra il 1887 e il 1891 come parte del "Risanamento" ("fare di nuovo in salute") è situato di fronte al Teatro San Carlo, Palazzo Reale, Caffe Gambrinus e si apre anche su via Toledo, un luogo ideale per fare acquisti. Très bon POV. Un cadrage excellent accentuant le graphisme des lieux et donnant un côté un peu insolite à l'image suggérant l'aspect de deux jambes géantes écartées (ou alors j'ai trop d'imagination -)). Une très bonne photo, c'est sûr!

Cambia il formato. La mia è verticale, mentre la tua è orizzontale.
Pertanto anche se il POV è quasi lo stesso, ma cambiano le prospettive.
Hai fatto un ottimo lavoro anche tu.

La galleria di Milano è simile ma molto più grande.
Il nome non è lo stesso. Quella di Milano si chiama: "Galleria di Vittorio Emanuele".

Hai dato invece tu alla tua foto, un titolo simile a quello che ho dato io alla mia foto e questo mi rende orgoglioso.

Ti ringrazio tanto. La inserisco tra le mie favorite.

A marvellous note accompanied by a very good photo! Loved reading about Napoli, which I would dearly like to visit one day. One does get contradictory views about it, of course.
The photo shows the architecture off really well, highlighting the graphical elements in a symmetrical presentation. Only the natural shadows affect the symmetry. The detail is so well rendered, too. And you kept the contrast nice and gentle. Great upload.

I visited this Galleria some thirty years ago in a former life working as an internal auditor on a trip on the QE2, Like the rest of Naples, a fascinating place and well worth visiting. The steep upwards point of view makes for a great graphical composition and provides a good idea of the wonderful architecture of this place. The lighting is perfect to bring out the detail; great piece of architectural photography. I wish you a good week, hopefully not too strenuous.

i think you have a winner with this one!
seriously, this is an eye stopper.
it doesn't happen very often when i look at a photo and i actually want to see more. what i mean by that is - with these "balance" and "symmetry" shots, usually the symmetry is what makes it so enjoyable and we're ok with whats inside the frames edges...but this one is so remarkable, i want to forget about the symmetry and just show me the whole damn thing!! lol
yes, of course i love the way you composed it too, but man...this architecture looks amazing. sometimes these italian and french photos make Vancouver look like crap! there is just nothing remotely similar to this here in "our home and native land" (thats a phrase in our national anthem - incase you didnt catch on there.
as for Naples...i agree with you. its a city thats surely on my to-do-list when visiting Italy. thanks for showing us this beauty

Napoli è bellissima e la trovo per le persone, le cose molto vicina al mio modo di essere. bella questa immagine della gallerie con gli angeli che dominano su Napoli. Due anni fa la parte a dx era in ristrutturazione e perciò ho scelto di scattare solo il braccio a sx. Se le ripesco le posto così poi mi dai un'opinione. Ciao mari

Fantastic shot, what graphism! It is very similar to the gallery in Milan but on this photo looks more impressive. Magnificent shot, very creative. Wooow! From what you write I think that Napoli is your city and maybe a bit biased but who isn't. I know many cities in Italy but mainly in the north. Many years ago I was close - I went to Pompei and had no time to visit Naples, I see it was a mistake :)).

at first I thought it is the famous Passage in Milano. Then I thought -Lisa presented Milano so originally that it looks completely different than usually. Then I realized it is completely different than Milano. :)
Incredible symmetry, fantastic rich elaborate details, I just love this place and it is surely one more reason to visit this fantastic city. I just put it on my list.

If one were not too aware of these roof structures, it does appear as seen in the thumbnail that the roof structure can almost flip from concave to convex and thus create a completely different feel inside this frame. The roof also takes up a predominant part of frame because of its size and shape. This photo almost looks surreal in a way...like it doesn't really exist. These are just a few of the many impressions I get from this photo. I love it...and wish I were there to take wide angle shots.

mi piace molto questa tua interpretazione grafica della galleria; sono stato a Napoli qualche mese fa e qui ho scattato diverse foto, ma con interpretazionei grafiche diverse da questa. Trovo la tua molto originale.
Ottima gestione della luce ed abbondante ricchezza di particolari.
