Photographer's Note
Castello Estense (‘Este castle’) is a moated medieval castle in the center of Ferrara, northern Italy. It is a large block with four corner towers.
Bizarrely the fortress was built not so much to protect the city from invasions, but to guarantee the security of the Ferrarese nobility in the event of riots by the Ferrarese people driven to desperation by taxes and flooding.

Girolamo Savonarola (21 September 1452 – 23 May 1498) was an Italian Dominican friar and reformer who preached against the perceived evils of the Renaissance. He was known for the destruction of secular art and culture, known as the bonfire of vanities. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood and a new Cyrus from the north who would reform the Church.
Strange ruler, twisted mind...

Hi Benny
Impressive title and photo, this really is an impressive place. I can only imagine how the people must have felt, to see this enormous structure appear in the centre of your own town, for the purpose of you being kept out in the event you get angry about being the one paying for it! I really admire the whole composition git created here, a great post
Cheers

Hallo Benny,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi Benny
So i guess this falls into the category of save yourself first!
how about trying to help out the citizens with the flooding, try some preventative measures before hand. Taxes are necessary in a city, but overly high taxes just piss people off.
I'd like to see more of this Medieval castle, looks quite large and bold with thick walls.
cool post and history lesson to go along with it
cheers

Dag Benny,
Mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Prettige dag verder,
John.
