Photographer's Note

A look upwards, inside the Cathedral of Naples to show the magnificent dome and its precious decorations.
Naples Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Napoli, Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta or Cattedrale di San Gennaro) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, the main church of Naples, southern Italy, and the seat of the Archbishop of Naples. It is widely known as the Cattedrale di San Gennaro, in honour of Saint Januarius, the city's patron saint.The present cathedral was commissioned by King Charles I of Anjou. Construction continued during the reign of his successor, Charles II (1285-1309) and was completed in the early 14th century under Robert of Anjou. It was built on the foundations of two palaeo-Christian basilicas, whose traces can still be clearly seen. Underneath the building excavations have revealed Greek and Roman artifacts.
The Archbishop's Palace adjoins the cathedral.The main attraction of the interior is the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, with frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco, altarpieces by Domenichino, Massimo Stanzione and Jusepe Ribera, the rich high altar by Francesco Solimena, the bronze railing by Cosimo Fanzago and other artworks, including a reliquary by 14th-century French masters.
Other artworks include an Assumption by Pietro Perugino, canvasses by Luca Giordano and the palaeo-Christian baptistery, with mosaics from the 4th century. The main chapel is a restoration of the 18th century, with a Baroque relief by Pietro Bracci. The Minutolo Chapel, mentioned in Boccaccio's Decameron, has 14th-century frescoes.
The crypt is by the Lombard Tommaso Malvito. The façade was reworked by Enrico Alvino in the late 19th century, but retains the 15th century portal, including some sculptures by Tino da Camaino.

UNO SGUARDO AL PARADISO

Uno sguardo verso l alto, dall interno del Duomo di Napoli per mostrarvi la magnifica cupola e le sue preziose decorazioni.
La cattedrale metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta è una basilica monumentale nonché duomo e sede dell'arcidiocesi della città di Napoli.
Il duomo sorge lungo il lato est della via omonima, in una piazzetta contornata da portici, e ingloba a mo' di cappelle laterali altri due edifici di culto sorti autonomamente rispetto alla cattedrale: la basilica di Santa Restituta, che custodisce il battistero più antico d'Occidente, quello di San Giovanni in Fonte, e la reale cappella del Tesoro di san Gennaro, che conserva le reliquie del santo patrono della città.
Si tratta di una delle più importanti e grandi chiese della città, sia da un punto di vista artistico, essa è di fatto la sovrapposizione di più stili che vanno dal gotico puro del Trecento fino al neogotico ottocentesco,che sotto un profilo culturale, ospitando infatti tre volte l'anno il rito dello scioglimento del sangue di san Gennaro.

You have again written an fascinating an informative note and given us a very fine photograph to admire. Ciao Luciano, Magnificent ceiling with the dome, so beautifully here presented. Superb symmetry, light and colours. It is a pity the picture is small and with the frame, in a bigger one (1400 pixels) we could see more details. Great shot anyway.

This is a spectacular piece of architecture and decorated exquisitely with paintings and gold relief. It's amazing to think that such craftsmanship was possible in the 12th-14th centuries.
I like your composition very much. It is extremely difficult to get the levels right as well as the symmetry when you are facing your camera upwards. I presume you had a tripod!

Excellent picture of the paradise. It is interesting to see that paradise in that time always was very crowded. Angels, humans and often also animals are crawling criss-cross through the scene.

Devi essere molto orgoglioso di questa foto. E' strepitosa. I colori, luce ed ombra sono perfetti. Conosco bene il Duomo e capisco bene come difficili sono i condizioni di luce. I toni blu sono ben resi e hai ottenuto una nitidezza, simmetria e prospettiva davvero impressionanti. Complimenti. This is a very beautiful dome. The cathedral looks really well decorated and the composition is very good. You managed light very well, even in the darker areas.
