Santa Maria Maggiore

This is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. It is one of the seven Pilgrim Churches in Rome and one of the four papal basilicas. It is owned by the Holy See, although it is located in Italy rather than the Vatican. The basilica was built on the Esquiline Hill according to a legend in 352, when a Roman citizen had a dream in which Mary told him he had to build a church on the spot where it would snow the following day (August 5 and even though that was and still is not one of the snowiest days in Italy, some snow did fall on top of the hill). In reality the church was founded in 432 by Pope Celestine I. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
