Chiesa di Santa Maria di Viezziu – Avendita di Cascia (PG)

Piccola chiesa campestre, sorta probabilmente come ampliamento di un’originaria edicola, prende il nome dal luogo in cui è ubicata.
Qui la vigilia di Ferragosto i giovani di Avendita vengono a dormire, il giorno dopo c’è la Messa all’aperto, all’esterno di questa minuscola chiesa.
La chiesa si trova in una piccola radura a poco più di mezz’ora di cammino dal paese ed è raggiungibile attraverso una strada sterrata che taglia campi e boschi.
La Messa ha inizio alle ore 7.
Dopo la cerimonia religiosa i fedeli raggiungono un luogo poco distante, nei pressi di una fonte d’acqua, dove fanno colazione con panini e vino.
L’aspetto è quello tipico dell’edificio votivo cinquecentesco, la semplice facciata ha un portale in pietra ed è ornata da due finestrelle laterali, attraverso cui i fedeli potevano venerare l’immagine sacra, protetti dalla trasanna.
Sulla facciata vi sono incise due date, 1897 e 1976, forse ricordo di restauri.
L’interno è a navata unica con copertura a capriate e pianelle ornate da decorazioni geometriche.
La parete di sinistra ora è spoglia ma sotto l’intonaco si intravedono tracce di affreschi.
L’originale edicola è sormontata da un arco sorretto da colonnine.
L’affresco, di ingenua fattura ma di notevole efficacia espressiva, bella testimonianza dell’arte popolare, rappresenta la Crocifissione, con a sinistra la Madonna e a destra San Giovanni, ai lati della parete della nicchia, i simboli dei Quattro Evangelisti, sopra al centro l’Eterno benedicente.
All’esterno della nicchia, in tre tondi, sono raffigurati un Santo Vescovo, la Madonna tra gli angeli, e una Santa.
Sulla parete di sinistra singolare e interessante affresco rappresentante l’Adorazione dei Magi, l’ignoto autore dimostra di possedere una buona prospettiva e un buon uso del colore, mantiene ancora reminiscenze gotiche.
La Madonna è in trono col Bambino, uno dei tre Re Magi è inginocchiato per offrire il suo dono, gli altri due, in piedi, hanno un insolito aspetto femmineo; in basso a destra, come al solito in formato minore, i committenti.

Hello Silvio,
You continue to amaze me with the many photo of the countless medieval Italian churches. This one is very simple, which suits my taste well, but we can see that hundreds of years ago there were talented painters to decorate even the smallest churches in te most remote places. The well used light enables us a very good view of the interior.

PS It would be easier to read the note if you edited it to remove the rnrnrn between each paragraph and started each paragraph on a new line.

We see nice picture, but it seems a crypte of the church of Santa Maria di Viezziu - Avendita di Cascia.
Again nice wall paintings, above the old wood construction.

This little church is quite a discovery, I think it is the first that I see so small, the paintings could have been very interesting judging by those of the Magi, which is very interesting, indeed two of the Kings look like Queens? quite a mystery.
Sharpness, lighting and color are very good.

Hello Silvio,

The dark wooden beams add a nice graphic element contrasting well with the lighter tones of the interior of the church. The faded frescoes are unpretentious. Good sharpness and lighting too. Tfs!
