Abbazia di San GiulianornIl complesso risale, nel suo insieme al secolo XII, ma le prime presenze eremitiche nel luogo risalgono ai primordi della cristianità.rnSecondo un’antica tradizione una matrona di nome Gregoria avrebbe donato i suoi possedimenti sul colle di Monteluco a Sant’Isacco, monaco giunto a Spoleto dalla Siria, per permettergli di fondare una chiesa e un monastero, che già esistevano verso la fine del VI secolo, perché è ricordato in due lettere di papa Pelagio I. In seguito divenne abbazia benedettina, retta prima dai Cassinesi, in seguito dai Cluniacensi e ad essa facevano capo gli eremiti di Monteluco che, dopo la morte di Sant’Isacco, erano entrati a far parte della famiglia benedettina. rnLa badia fu soppressa verso la fine del XV secolo da papa Innocenzo VIII e passò nel 1502 ai Canonici Lateranensi, che la tennero per mezzo secolo. All’inizio dell’Ottocento risultava distrutta da tempo imprecisato. La chiesa, anch’essa abbandonata, passò in mani private e venne addirittura utilizzata come fienile. Solo nei primi anni del ‘900 il Comune ne rivendicò con successo la proprietà.rnLa facciata della Chiesa risulta essere mutila della parte superiore, che doveva essere a spioventi. Frammenti della costruzione paleocristiana, probabilmente l’architrave della recinzione del presbiterio, sono riutilizzati nel portale coronato da un’elegante trifora. Nei rilievi del portale si possono ammirare motivi a embrici e trifogli, animali simbolici (due colombi, un bue, una pantera, un pavone), motivi vegetali, una croce, un centauro.rnL’interno basilicale, a tre navate con tre absidi semicircolari e cripta, è decorato da pittori locali del XV secolo. L’affresco dell’abside centrale con l’Incoronazione della Vergine e santi e beati, commissionato nel 1442 dall’abate Argento Campello, è opera del Maestro di Eggi.r

Hello Silvio,
This is a fascinating building. It's so empty and neglected, but the rows of plain columns create a magnificent view towards the apse, where the light is streaming through a window and we see the remains of frescos.

Ciao Silvio,
These heavy columns make a great impression. Of course pity that they are so rough and damaged but their shape is enough to convince us about their former glory.
The altar in the centre seems to have preserved more details.
Very nice central symmetry here,

Good repetition of the columns and their Doric capitals. Excellent sharpness and perspective and the bg altar with its rust red colour contrasts well with the mostly almost b&w & grey tones Tfs!

Hi Silvio,

La longueur de la nef donne de la profondeur à la composition. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de l'intérieur de la chapelle de l'abbaye de Saint-Julien. La lumière environnante a un bel effet sur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

A great view down the middle of this old abbey with its massive white columns and arches on either side, which create a nice perspective towards the artwork still visible in the distance. Well done.

Buongiorno Silvio,
The peeled plaster upon the pillars and the ragged floor are evident to the ancient existance of this place.
Managed well with the scanty outside light, a fairly good outcome.
