Cortile circolare - Palazzo Farnese - Caprarola (VT)

Dalla porta di fronte a quella di ingresso si accede al cortile interno del Palazzo Farnese ha forma di cerchio inscritto nella pianta pentagonale del palazzo. Tale soluzione fu adottata da Vignola, dopo aver scartato una configurazione poligonale, per variare la forma architettonica tra esterno e interno. La sua realizzazione, iniziata intorno al 1560, fu portata a definitivamente a compimento nel 1579.
La pavimentazione è in cotto, con selci e coltellate di mattoni disposti a spina di pesce, realizzate nel 1579; vi si aprono 10 caditoie perimetrali in pendenza verso l’interno ove è situata una “bocca della verità” che raccoglie tutta l’acqua piovana, un tempo utilizzata per ogni necessità quotidiana, convogliandola nel cosiddetto “bicchierone” posto al centro dei sotterranei.
Tutto il perimetro del cortile è delimitato da un porticato a doppio ordine anch’esso circolare, voltato a botte, costituito da 10 arcate sovrapposte e realizzato in peperino grigio.

The blue sky is a perfect circle here and it is surrounded so well by the beautiful façades around the courtyard with its arches and fine details. I really like the play of light and shadows as well.

That certainly is a photo opportunity not to be missed! Perfectly round courtyard presents just fantastic classic architecture. Italy probably is probably richer on that than any other country.
Blue sky of course looks great too.

Hi Silvio,

An interesting view straight up to the blue sky from this circular building. Good colour and sharpness. I think the photo could be improved by having a wider field of view, but perhaps your camera doesn't have a wide angle lens.
