Photographer's Note
View from the top of one of the two extinct volcanoes (Monte Fossa delle Felci) that make up the island of Salina in the Aeolian islands off the north coast of Sicily. The volcano visible here is Monte dei Porri. The view is well worth the 900 metre climb to the top!
The two islands in the distance are Filicudi and Alicudi. This is a photo from several years ago. I've been back to the islands several times since but have never found the same atmosphere with the low clouds and still sea.

Hello John..this climb must have been fascinating..the satisfaction when you saw this for the first time must have been diff to pit in words..Indeed this one will take your breath away..not often does one get a pov like this one..especially after a climb...taken from an aircraft/hot air balloon is different..but to have done is commendable.
The land at the base has been cleared and prepared for cultivation ??..
Overall an fascinating one..i am a 'mountain guy' hence is really feel jealous right now :)
Surely a favourite..tfs

Amazing how far people build and cultivate on this mountain slope. If a giant stood on top of the mountain, his neck'd be sticking out above the clouds :]
Nice colours!

Hello John,
Excellente photographie de cette ancien volcan !
J'aime beaucoup ce ciel fonçé qui ressemble ŕ un plafond au dessus de ce sommet et qui tranche bien avec le vert des flancs du volcans.
Superbe !

The picture itself is really beautiful, but what catches me here, is the people living on the way up to the volcano, I hope it is extinct:)

John,
I have already seen this shot several times when opening your intro and yet never wrote a critique although always felt compelled to do so. This is an incredible shot. One of this shots that makes TE so worthwhile to me and made me join TE two years ago. A shot that makes me decades old desire, starting as a teenager, to go to Sicily and see the beauty with my own eyes. Fantastic and I believe you that the 900m ascent was worth every single mm. Wonderous light and atmosphere.

Hi, John -
A fascinating photo and a fabulous light capture! The sky looks more ominous than the volcano, while the bits of mountaintops peeking above the clouds adds a mystical touch. Definitely worth the climb!

For sure, the lightning and the atmosphere there are very strong with the houses in the sun and all the overall landscape under the cloudy sky. It looks like the weather of Iceland but in South Italia which should not happen often.
When I was in Stromboli and Vulcano, the lightning was really different.
I understand you got a large success with this shot.

I have been to the islands earlier this year and looked out from the same point that you have taken this picture from... in much less spectacular conditions... which is why this photo appeals to me all the more... great cloud cover, fine view into the distance and nice light... were the clouds really that dark?

Hi John!
Very nice shot of that Sicilian volcano. I do believe you when you say the 900m climb is worth doing, the POV is impressive. I also like the light here and the strange atmosphere created by the combination of the three natural elements (sky-sea-volcano) and above all by the threatening sky.
Nice job!
Quentin.
