Photographer's Note
‘Ohrid - Visiting the Bay of Bones’
Dedicated to everyone who was convinced at my previous photo that I showed the wrong main photo.
But I really wanted to start with that picture :)
Today I continue my series on that site in the Bay of Bones on Lake Ohrid where 24 replicas of prehistoric houses tell the daily life of a society living in stilt houses at the end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age.
It is supposed that at the time the prehistoric village on the lake had over 60 houses.
All of the artifacts in the small museum have been found in the sand at the bottom of the lake, not on land.
Perhaps interesting to know is that only bones from animals were found. No human bones. In the time of the prehistoric settlement human bodies were burned.
The houses are furnished as they must have looked like 3.000 years ago.
A clay oven is available in some houses.
Livestock was closed off with a wall of braided twigs.
Ceramic pots and tools made of stone and bone are on display in the museum.
For those who missed the previous photo:
From: https://www.discoveringmacedonia.com/2018/bay-of-bones-museum-ohrid/ :
The Bay of Bones museum that can be visited today is a partial reconstruction of a large prehistoric complex.
Archaeological investigations between 1997 and 2005 showed that a large number of excavated remains pointed to a massive settlement on Lake Ohrid.
The prehistoric settlement occupied 8.500 square meters and was supported by 10.000 wooden piles that were all anchored to the lake bed.
It concerns a settlement from the very end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. This means that the settlement was there between 1200 and 700 BC (so over 3.000 years ago).
Around that period Lake Ohrid was quite shallow allowing for a massive wooden structure to be erected above the water.
Why that name?
The name Bay of Bones is fairly accurate.
The excavations provided a large number of animal remains. Also fragmented but well preserved vessels.
The findings pointed out to a highly developed settlement.
A small prehistoric town that was neatly constructed above the water and connected to land by a number of small, but sturdy bridges.
The Bay of Bones is located on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid, about halfway between Ohrid and Sveti Naum.

Just followed Malgo with a picture from same location, Paul.
Small waves gave a wonderful pattern over water with daylight enhancved the colors of the whole scene here.
well included the foreground branches in vivid green.
Have a nice new day,

Hi Paul,
Lovely series of photos, this time the main upload is definitely the most interesting.
Lovely location over the famous lake. Nice framing with tree branches and pleasant color of the water.
The name of the place sound a bit scary. You don't know what to expect, like a horror place but I suppose if you gather all bones from chickens I may have eaten in my life it would create a pile of bones...
Very well done,
M

Hello Paul,
The main photo indicates that this Bronze Age village was more neatly built than the average South East Asian water village. The five photos are all interesting, with WS #4 giving us the nicest general view of the village and the surroundings. The fine weather produced very good light and fine colours. I am slightly confused as to which objects are "real" and which are reconstructions based on theories by the archeologists.
Kind regards,
Gert

Mooie, klassieke compositie met goed gebruik van het groen. Ik behoor niet tot de groep die de doodskopstart niet zo goed vond, wel integendeel :)
Groetjes

The main post is well composed with the dwellings taking centre stage.
The reflections are quite special.

Bonjour Paul,

Mooi gedaan, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Hi Paul, second post really very useful from this place that celebrates the distant past of these settlements by the lake. This time there are also some interior views, with objects dedicated to daily life and fishing, very rich and high quality post as always! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Paul, I liked the bull's head. What a problem, you show this beautiful view from the side of the water today.
Charming picture, with the forested hills in the background and clear water. For me, who was there, the most interesting is the wide view from the road. Strange to see it without any tourists.
Best regards MAlgo

Hi Paul
This photo gives us a great view of the recreated village and lake. A good photo of a fascinating place, another one that I'd never heard of (probably the same for many TE members).
cheers

Hello Paul,
Thank you for this series of photographs, which tell an amazing tale of life thousands of years ago. It makes you understand how much safer it would be to live in houses situated on water, with a guarded bridge for access. I wonder why it was abandoned so long ago!
Your main photograph leads the way, sharply captured, with an attractive natural border of leaves. The water looks amazingly clean!
I was inspired to revisit the excavation of Glastonbury Lake Village on YouTube and though I often fancied being an archaeologist, digging in all that mud was a bit off-putting!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Paul,
Een mooi gezicht op het heldere en kalme water van het meer en de op palen gebouwde huizen in het midden. Ze worden mooi omringd door de groene bomen en het licht was aangenaam en helder.

I saw the images of malgo too before. very interesting this place I never had heard about. being isolated above the water should be nice to prevent attacks of humans and animals I guess. nice images showing the recreation of the ancient architecture.
take care

Hi Paul.
What an interesting place, from which we get a good idea of what it would be like in its moment of greatest glory, thanks to the splendid explanatory note and the three compositions that allow us to see the beauty of the environment, how the cabins were grouped and their shape of construction, with the rusticity of the moment.
An image to enjoy, with its beautiful color, great luminosity and perfect sharpness.
Superbly captured. I love it.
Happy start of the week.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Paul,
What a pretty reconstruction of an historic settlement! I like the way you used the tree to frame it.
Regards,
MT
PS. I realized I forgot to answer a question you asked. Mosques built after 1929 still have Arabic script because Muslim consider Arabic to be the divine language.
