‘Ohrid - Sveti Kliment Church at Plaošnik’
The church of Sveti Kliment (St. Clement) and Panteleimon is a replica of the old church of St. Panteleimon, built by Kliment of Ohrid in 863 and demolished by the Ottomans.
Plaošnik is the name of the archaeological site in Ohrid.
Apart from the old church's many reconstructions during the Ottoman Empire, it has since 2000 undergone extensive reconstruction and excavation. The church was completed in 2002.
In the 9th century the original church was built by Kliment on the ruins of the early 5th-century basilica at Plaošnik.
After his dead in 916 Kliment was buried in the church.
In recent years about 150 graves have been found. During Kliment’s time the church was also a hospital.
In the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, the church was repeatedly renovated and enlarged.
However, during the Ottoman time it was transformed into a mosque.
Even before the end of the Ottoman Empire, the mosque was destroyed.
A legend says that Kliment’s monastery and his tomb were all that remained at Plaošnik.
Excavations started in 1943 and the foundations of the church, the basilica and the tomb were found. Excavations still continue.
The site of the excavations is on the other side of the church you see in my main photo.
Actually you see the back of the church. But I had a better light there to show the building. You can see the front in the WS.

Hello Paul,
I had to retrieve my diary from my journey to the Balkans in 2009 to remember this church. I mention it quite briefly as recently completely renovated and surrounded by excavation. I was surprised to find that I mention everything in Ohrid quite briefly, so obviously I wasn't terribly impressed by the city. I mention that I had seen more interesting old churches in Italy and Turkey.
The total renovation is evident in these photos, of which you selected the clearly best one for main upload. The light is perfect and the few persons enliven the view. We get very good alternative views in the WS. The one from above, with the trees and the lake, could also have been a main upload.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello, Paul, I was there too and have plenty of photos, but not so good as yours. It looks too new but I liked the patterns with the bricks, especially around the windows. The view from there on the lake is beautiful. Nice composition and great colours in a sunny day.
Best regards MAlgo

Hallo Paul
I also took a few photos of this attractive church. The people animate the scene. The red bricks contrast well with the blue sky. Tfs!

Hello Paul
Beautiful view of this church. You controlled the light well by choosing from this angle. I like the photo of the workshop from the perspective of architecture more. Well done. With respect

Goedemiddag Paul,
Heel mooi foto werk, zelf uw three extra foto's, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,
John

Bonjour Paul,
La présence des personnes a un effet d'échelle de grandeur. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de l'architecture de l'église Saint-Clément. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

Hi Paul,
I like that you presented this lovely church from all angles. But the main upload has the best sky which makes the picture the most eye catching. I like also how the guys are captured there walking one after another.
I love the Byzantine architecture.
Very interesting one!

Hello Paul,
How sad that the Ottoman rulers should destroy such an amazing building.
Looking at the modern reconstruction (from both aspects) shows the massive and highly unusual church building. It is like a combination of church, castle, palace, with delightful brick and tile patterns.
Can you imagine being involved in an excavation here! The archaeological site looks so interesting! (In fact, that view is my favourite.)
As always, your exposures collect the details with excellent clarity and the colour saturation is true.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Paul,

Hi Paul, perfect light for the main photo, but in fact the most interesting part is seen in the WS despite the worst lighting, with the old ruins of this place that has truly lived through all the stages of the history of this village, changing its intended use, forms and religions. Now it shows its new construction that keeps the typical Orthodox style, once again a really interesting post. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

what an interesting building and a well composed photo. The four people not only give it scale but bring a little action into an otherwise static image

Hi Paul.
Superb composition with this beautiful church, which, although recently built, is marvelous as it follows the traditional style, which here is fascinating with so many different volumes and towers. The view of the other face in the WS is equally superb, here you have the addition of the ruins of the old one.
Magnificent composition and color, as well as an excellent
brightness and sharpness.
Good job. I love the photo.
Have a great day. Very best regards.
Luis.
P.S. To which you ask me about my previous post, we did not have time to enter the building, I could only take the photo from a distance, I have not found what they are called either.

Hello Paul,
What a beautiful church. The old stones and bricks create such nice patterns, and I like all the various arches. It's nice to have some people in the frame, and a bright, blue sky, too.
