Matka Canyon, a photo from Skopje, West

Photographer's Note

The Treska River flowing through Matka Canyon was dammed in 1937. Fortunately the dam downstream from here survived the 1963 earthquake that decimated the nearby Macedonian capital of Skopje. The backlight here was tricky and I have had to add highlights and shadows and adjust brightness and contrast. The reflections in the reservoir were too good to ignore despite the poor lighting. The lighting was indeed very difficult and you have done very well to produce such a fine image. The reflections were certainly worth the effort and I also like the well rendered textures and colours in the rocks.

Amazing view combined with interesting light - I really like the contrast between warm and cold hues. Good idea to present it in portrait format and include a bit of blue sky reflection at the bottom.

The light with the fog on the "real" view, was filtered by the water surface, and the reflection looks in fine clarity, Chris. Awesome nature scenery, light upon the rocks mingling beautifully with the shaded parts.
Impressive photo, simply pleasure to view this.

Hello Chris,

It does look a tricky shot with regard to the lighting but, I agree with you, this was a scene far too good to miss!
However, you have achieved a stunning shot! The still water holds the reflection well; then there are extreme contrasts of sunlight and shadows.
That particularly well lit triangle of grass, with its reflection, really draws attention!

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. Certainement une des plus belle de la journée. Là ou les ombres se mêlent à la lumière . J'aime particulièrement les reflets dans les eaux calmes.

Hi Chris,
Light on this canyon is fantastic. Sunlit areas are a bit hazy but are still well in balance with shadows. Macedonia is not a major tourist country so such gems are still relatively unknown.
Water on the bottom shows some posterization effect. I wonder if you have used stronger PP than usually.

Yes - I can image how difficult it must be with the light, but the 'artist' in you must have visualise the play of light, colour tones and reflections in the scene. Wonderful composition.

Beautiful capture of this canyon especially the reflections. Looks like the lighting was difficult to managed but you did a wonderful job with it. I like the fiery light. The vertical format worked well with the composition. Very well done, tfs.

Hello Chris,
The light might have been tricky but the result is good! The reflections are beautiful, too. Former Yugoslav Republic, that descriptive term in the long name for Macedonia is thanks to Greece objecting to simply Macedonia for the country's name, as if we cna't tell the difference between a country and a province.
