‘Tetovo’s Painted Mosque - 4’
I’d like to come back to the Šarena Džamija in Tetovo.
I had already written that the panels on the outside reminded me of the reverse of playing cards.
Many other members thought so too.
A comment from Beverley made me look up which is actually the oldest. Beverley thought these panels might have inspired other art.
Playing cards were invented in Imperial China. They were found in the 9th century during the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
Those cards were nothing like playing cards as we know them today. They were used to play games now known as dominoes.
In Europe, the first cards were recorded in Italy around 1370. Within a period of twenty years after the first mentions, playing cards were spread all over Europe.
The Šarena Džamija was originally built in 1438 and rebuilt in 1833.
Did one influence the other or vice versa? Possibly through a number of intermediate steps? Hard to make out.
Possibly this resemblance is only seen by people from certain cultures. Perhaps the Muslims of Tetovo do not think there is any kind of resemblance at all …

Hallo Paul,
Zo van dichtbij zijn de rijke schilderingen op de muren van de moskee nog beter te zien. De kleuren gaan ook heel mooi samen. Goede compositie en helderheid.

Hello Paul,
I have never noticed that "normal" Muslims (=people being basically like you and me) would have anything against spending their time with a good game, so the people of Tetovo might very possible be familiar with a deck of cards and smile at the similarities.
In this photo you used the tiles of the nearest roof well as a lower frame, countered by the roof of the mosque itself at the top.
Although this is a good photo, as usual I personally find the WS of the men sitting on the floor more interesting.
Best regards,
Gert

Bonsoir Paul,
Les oeuvre d'art sont impressionnantes. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de cette partie de la Mosquée de Tetovo. La lumière met en valeur les couleurs de l'image. Bonne soirée.

Hello Paul, Like many others, O also have the impression it is made of cards. On the other hand, often the carpets inside mosques are made of such small pieces. Who knows what could be the inspiration. Anyway, It is a fantastic mosque. Nice also photos in Workshops. I regret that I missed it.
Best regards

Salut Paul,
Ces originales et belles décorations murales valent bien une autre vue avec un plan rapproché, c'est parfait pour mettre en valeur ces motifs et ces teintes, bien fait avec le contraste avec les tuiles et les arches, intéressant.

Hello Paul,
Three more superb photographs detailing the Painted Mosque.
Though this one shows the patterns in close detail, I actually really prefer the photograph with the minaret and would have added this as a backup photograph.
That doesn't mean that I dislike this, it is excellent (as are both w/s examples) it just means by order of preference would have been different.
We are so lucky to share photographs from around the world, from like-minded photographers, to enjoy scenes from far and wide! I love it!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Beste Paul,
John

Hallo Paul,
The fg tiled roof acts as a border and frame and provides depth and layering to the composition. Good colour, sharpness and lighting. Tfs!

I had in mind you would show a close-range picture of those walls, paul.
graet design and superb photojob upon the big painted tiles, archade and good scale with view of the ceiling inside.
Have a nice new day,

Hi Paul,
Whatever the reason, the decoration is very original and eye catching. A structure which is unique for sure.
Nice closer view of the decorative paintings. The tiles make a nice pattern in the foreground too.
Very well done,
