Stop And Go In Monaco, a photo from Monte-Carlo, North

Photographer's Note

I’m sure most of us, if not all, tend to look around for photo opportunities even in our down time. More often than not, that’s when I seem to get the best of luck in realizing something I wouldn’t have otherwise…and this was such an instance.

While sitting around and waiting for my train back to Nice, this simple, every day scene was literally passing me by. :)

Unfortunately I didn’t have my tripod at the time, so I remained as still as possible to try and capture the motion of the train…which could have used a slightly slower shutter speed (ooh, say that five times fast ) for better effect, but it most likely would have resulted in a blurred foreground as well. I just wasn’t gifted with the ninja-like steady hands of so many others.

I think the gentleman waiting on the bench was so involved with his phone, he didn’t even know his train had departed without him! lol Bon voyage!

Hi Jason,

Haha, the guy missed the train, you think? Funny to think like this. Very modest this sign Monaco-Monte Carlo. Difficult light conditions but nice result. I make a lot of photos in the airports and not so many on the train stations. Maybe because I spend much more time waiting for the planes. And tomorrow I will see new airport :).

The motion of the passing train is in great contrast to the man sitting on the platform-bench with such calm. He is ignoring the noise and the happenings around him, busy with his cell, like most peple doing these days...

Hi Jason,
Actually I think your shutter speed was more optimal. I like to see details of the train, text and benches and such, while this clearly shows that train is moving. Cool shot with colours that catch attention. Excellent title, especially now that the F1 season is back in action.

Hello Jason ,
You've made here a superb capture of this attractive red TER in the Monaco railway station . I like the effect of the blurred BG , even this is not your first choice . The man on the benche is a real bonus , and the framing is perfect .
I remember that this station is especially clean ... but all is perfectly clean in Monaco , except the money , may be ...

Hello Jason,

You are right about photography making us aware of objects and situations that we would not otherwise have noticed. I think it makes us all more alert and more appreciative of what is around us.

As you note, a simple scene and, yet, it has fine horizontal layers of differing colours and textures, the awaiting passenger is well placed and a most important element as a contrast to help create the sense of movement from the train.

Is it a bus? Is it a train? No, its bustrain, here to solve crimes and catch all those criminals....
Nice capture of the movement here, and to contrast that movement, you have the Monaco sign in pin sharp detail. A fine composition taking in the platform at the lower part.
I laughed when I read this guy may have missed his train, that's what happens when you download Angry Birds I guess!

I like trains and train stations, and I like this photo. :-) I think the blur of the train is just right since we can still see the details. The colors are strong, and that one lone man is great. Everyday situations can certainly offer interesting photos. :-)

Once more, your capture made me felt a bit dizzy, second effects of?
The train at the back is moving and you capture it with low speed, enough to show details of it, don t complain , just good
Like the simetry and color contrasts of the flag of France, being my prefered here the Monaco Monte Carlo sign, what a smart destination!

And your idea of the man, he is ( my idea) quietly sending-receiving messages, just as people did in bars and cafes all over the world, forgeting to drink the coffee or the..Coke they asked, in this case to take the train

Hi Jason,
It's just as well that you didn't have a tripod. By the time you set it up and adjusted for the ideal shutter speed, you would have missed your train like the gentleman on the bench. You took an attractive enough photo with a hint of a motion blur on the train. Well done, fastest drawer in the west!

As I can see from your photos, you have enjoyed your journey to Monaco. This is not a very usual photo from Monte Carlo. Honestly to admit, I see first time a photo from Monte Carlo railway stop (I think it is not a station). Excellent daily life snapshot, perfectly framed in tight crop. I like it.

Hi, Jason,
This is my first comment after some break. Glad to see a new post from your old folders. Monako and Monte Carlo are the two symbols of the cool life. It reminds me "The passion rules the game" of the Scorpions. Good result of a slower shutter speed, and more blured train could be more attractive.

Yeah, maybe a slightly longer shutter would deepen the effect, but I think it works quite well as is; the blur is noticeable and compared with the really sharp surroundings expresses movement quite well. I love how the reds jump out of this shot too, really bold colors. Thanks!

been away from TE for awhile, sometimes its nice to take a few days break. Lisa and I call it TEBO - TE Burn Out

the one good thing about taking a few days off is that you know members will new photos for me to look at, just like you have here.

Oh Gert would be happy with this one, the people on the right anchor the entire shot - they are the most important elements in the scene.

with the people so 'still' it makes the movement of the train that much more effective.

just watch your step when you're looking through the view finder lol

I like very much the arrangement of this picture and the way you've juxtaposed stillness and movement, the one giving reference to the other. The colours are vivid and bright and its interesting that the most important details are in dark and discreet tones. I also like the depth that continues in the interior of the train, the shiny floor and the placement of the people -one still, the other travelling in the train- near the side borders. A very attractive photo, composed and illuminated superbly. Congratulations and thank you!
